Information

Briar's Gully Campground

The Waimate District Council looks after this campsite and for a small fee you can experience the goodness. Please register and pay on arrival - information is on the registration booths. This is the closest campsite to Benmore Dam right on the Waitaki River. Camp underneath the willows. Heaps of places to call your own. There are excellent toilet facilities here as well as recycling and water. You can water ski in the little lake, pick a bunch of delicious fruit, or go for walks over Benmore Dam and to the lookout. There is a safe cycle route into the town of Otematata. This place is extremely popular with the locals, who camp here for the season.

This geo tag is in the wrong location.

The Briars Gully campground is farther down the road. It’s very full with empty trailers from locals who park there for the camping season. This area that’s pinned is a no camping area. We didn’t see the sign coming from the direction we came, but if you go farther down the main road, there’s a sign. A local came by and took a picture of us parked here, which made us think we shouldn’t be there. We went back up the main road and saw the sign, so we moved on.

    A beautiful kiwi treasure spot.

We came in late August and there was nobody here. Probably still a bit chilly. I can imagine this place goes off in the summer time.

Went register into the site station but no envelopes or any kind of documentation available so decided to risk it. Happy to pay if any one from the council would like to get a hold of me.

Couple of drawbacks was the amount of general rubbish lying around from previous occupiers. Bit sad too see tidy kiwi not here.

What was interesting was the amount of dead wallabies on the road parallel to the camping area. It would appear that the locals had been through the area night shooting leaving the carcasses where they fell. We counted five fresh carcasses on the road.

Overall a lovely spot to park up for the night.
