Craw Camping Ground

The Craw Campground off winding Anawhata Road is a grassy area on the ridge next to the old Craw Homestead.

The walk to down to nearby Anawhata beach is a real beaut.

Stayed here in a campervan end of May, we were the only ones there.

Access road from the main road took 20+ minutes, down bumpy gravel track, could be a bit hairy if wet. Actual campsite is in the middle of nowhere, an hours walk down the hill to Piha. Composting toilet, very clean and stocked with loo roll. Alright spot if you’re looking for a cheap spot and not bothered about location, just a small field basically. Other reviews mentioned about getting in, they email you the code for the lock and you need to give it a bit of a push/ wiggle to get it to open.

Craw campground is a small campsite with a sink, worktop space, a long drop toilet and some wooden camp tables.

It was lovely to see the cleaner arrive to give the toilet a caring for and a clean.

There is a good lookout spot at the back of the camp, head to the sink area corner and follow the trail.

From the main road junction to the camp grounds, it takes around 15 mins to travel over the gravel road; I think a ute would be able to travel a lot quicker over the road. There are some potholes along the way, just take your time and pull in when you can do others can pass.

A clear night at Craw is a bonus to enjoy the very dark night sky.

Staying for 1 night is $9 per adult person (2023), which I think is the minimum price charged for the various Auckland Council campgrounds. You can get some mobile phone signal there but possibly not for all the networks.

I do agree that trying to fit 40 people on this site would make it feel a little squashed.

Too small for max of 40 ppl.

The square grass area where you can camp, the best places to camp are on the perimeter and otherwise there is no shade. I would not recommend.

Warning ,to avoid the new ARC booking scam .only book each person on separate booking. If you book a group be warned the council will charge 20% of the TOTAL booking fee paid for everyone should you wish

to amend or cancel the booking for one person meaning you will in most cases get no refund at all !

Open grass area with paved area that has counter space and kitchen sink.

The water isn’t treated so you need to boil before consuming. There is only one drop toilet but it’s clean with extra toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The drive to the campgrounds is on narrow gravel roads that might be hard if it’s rainy. You’ll need to book ahead to get the gate code for lock. No shower or WiFi. It’s basic but in good condition. It’s only $8pp so a great price if you’re in the area.

Loved this campsite, even though it had basic facilities.

Beautiful lookout and plenty to see and do in the area.
