Plenty of space to stay on river flats surrounded by native bush and only 30 minutes drive from Wellington City. Lots of nearby walks including beautiful (and brisk) river swims.

Have a chat to the ranger to get permission to light a campfire on the riverbank - an amazing way to spent the evening under the stars!

Credit card and debit card payments can be made on site.

6 powered sites up here. First in first served. Cost $16 per adult per night and $8 for 16 and under. Under 5 free.

Fees for unpowered sites is $8 per adult per night and $4 per child under 16. Under 5 is free.

We recently spent a couple of lovely nights here.

Firstly on a powered site, then on an unpowered on the top terrace, the lower terrace was all closed due to rain. Nice campsite, didn’t use any facilities, close to lots of nice walks. Pay machine dotted about. Nice spot! Find us on YouTube if you’re about, Saltyskin Road Trip

    Great spot.

Avoid long weekends as place is packed, hard to find a spot and no one is respectful of rules for quiet, no fireworks etc. Was noisy until midnight. Outside of long weekend you could easily find a spot all to yourself

Just an update on the prices - the unpowered tent sites are $8 per person

This place could be heaven if it was not so crowded and noisy.

Facilities are ok for the price (8$ unpowered site), no showers but a cold and clear river to swim into.

Very big camp ground in beautiful nature.

Self-pay and find a camping spot. Could take a bath in the river. Gates closed 9 pm-6 am. Some people playing music late, but didn’t really bother us

6 Powered sites available, very clean toilets, no showers but an awesome river to swim in.

This is a beautiful camp site with great walks and places to sit and just rest and enjoy the surroundings. A bit noisy over new years etc. but after that it was very quiet. Highly recommended.

$8 per adult for unpowered sites and $16 for powered sites.

Free BBQs and even jugs and toasters available for use at most of the kitchen areas.

Stunning setting, great walks around the river. If you are looking at staying for a few days and need a hot shower, the pool in Upper Hutt - H2O Xtreme is $5.10 per adult and has a large public spa, sauna and steam room (over 16s only).

    Awesome campground.

The park is beautiful and well maintained, and it's a scenic drive in/out too. You can park up or camp right next to the river. There are plenty of short walks in the park or you can swim in the river. Facilities were clean, the only thing that stopped me from giving it a 10 was that there are no showers. We were there on a weekend and it can get pretty busy but there's loads of space.

    Great location by the river.

Just be careful with other people’s dogs. My son was bitten on the face by a dog whose owners left it unattended on a 10m rope. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We spent half a day in hospital and my son will now have Permenant scaring.

The ranger said he couldn’t do much other than tell the dog owner to tie their dog up on a shorter leash.

Tbh - I think he should have evicted them from the camp grounds, as their dog was clearly not under their control. I would have liked a better response. Especially as it was Wellington anniversary weekend and the park was very busy with kids running everywhere.

Kaitoke is a favorite of ours.

Really happy vibe, good family campground. Rangers are total stars!

Pet friendly- so there are a tonne of dogs at all times, but owners are very responsible. Great wee tracks nearby, swimming holes, perfect for kids to take bikes. Good for tents, caravans or campers.

This was our favourite campsite we stayed out of our three week tour of New Zealand.

It was so quiet and peaceful and the facilities were really good. No showers, but we weren’t looking for a campsite with them that night. There are loads of goods walks that you can do from the campsite itself and if you have a clear night, it’s amazing for stargazing as there’s no light pollution!

Lovely open spaces, lots of different spots to pick.

Tyre swings, picnic tables around the place so lots of choice spots. Had a wonderful dip in the river, deep enough for a adult to paddle, but shallow enough for my 5yr old to stand. Amenities are great and clean, bbq work well. Will definitely come again and bring my dog.

We arrived so late and we could find several free sites. Also facilities were clean and accessible. If you like Lord of the rings, you could enjoy Rivendell :)

There were lots of areas to camp, but the area was fairly boggy in many sections due to recent rains.

So we ended up choosing to park our largish motorhome on one of the gravel powered sites, without knowing what the fees would be for power, which we didn't really need. (The information display showed that it was $8 per person without power, which we thought was quite reasonable.) To our great surprise when the friendly ranger arrived in the early evening (as expected) he told us the fee had recently been increased for power, another $8 per person per night -- so the choice was to pay this excessive fee, or move off to a possibly boggy site. We were not excited! (But we chose to pay up rather than move camp after having had dinner and some nice wine.)

The upside of this camp was the enjoyable and picturesque walk down to and along the river to the Hobbit(?) film location, I understand there are several other nice walks as well.

Beautiful park with plenty of choice as to where to camp.

The ranger comes around each evening to collect camping fees. At $8 per adults it’s great value. Toilets and cooking areas are adequate. There are no showers. Good swimming holes nearby. Very happy to stay again.

Facilities are excellent and ranger did great job of keeping up with the large number of people staying over Christmas. Pleased to see recycling facilities too. Very picturesque spot and so well laid out, you could all feel like you had your own space. Highly recommended.

We were here just after Christmas and the place had a great vibe.

The lower site is definitely preferred although it has no power sites and not very level, but it’s great fun finding your own special spot. It’s great to have a campsite like this where you can’t book and it’s so big that you can just show up when the weather looks good.

    No soul, it's just big.

Nothing else, nothing more. Many locals I guess and much music playing. Not what we expected from a national park.
