South Island ▷ West Coast ▷
The West Coast is genuinely loaded with good walking. The trick is knowing which ones are worth your legs. Around Punakaiki, the Truman Track at low tide and the Pororari River Track are both easy wins. Further south, the Hokitika Gorge Walk is tour bus country mid-day, but go early or late and it's genuinely stunning glacial water and swingbridges. Near Franz Josef, the Roberts Point Track is the one I'd pick for glacier views - varied, interesting, and gets you properly close. The Alex Knob Track is a solid grunt too if you want the distant panorama. If you want a guided walk without the heli-hike price tag, the guided walks around Franz Josef are a genuinely affordable alternative.

Don't rush the Haast Pass drive. Thunder Creek Falls is a five-minute walk and properly impressive. Roaring Billy Falls gets less traffic and is worth the stop. The Blue Pools will be the busiest thing you do all day, but the water is extraordinary and I'd still swim it - just have your sandfly plan sorted before you strip off. For the more adventurous, there are off-track creek walks like Wilson Creek that most people drive straight past, and they're often the best memories of the whole stretch.
Up near Karamea, the Oparara Arch Walk is worth the 14km of winding road to get there - just note the 2.8m height restriction makes it a no-go for larger motorhomes. The Nikau Walk at Kohaihai is the gentler alternative if you've got a bigger rig. Over in Charleston, the caving and glowworm adventure at Underworld Adventures is less polished than the tourist-heavy options elsewhere, which is exactly why I like it - and you can use promo code RANKERS to save 10% on top.
