South Island ▷ Southland ▷
Art and culture isn't the first thing you think of in Southland, and that's kind of the point. The Lost Gypsy Gallery in Papatowai is genuinely unlike anything else in the country. Blair, the bloke behind it, is an inventor and tinkerer who's built a world of gadgets and gizmos from recycled and natural materials. No LCD screens, no algorithm. Just hands-on, oddball wonder that'll have you grinning on the way out. It's the kind of place you stumble into and end up spending way longer than you planned.
Over in Invercargill, the Bill Richardson Transport World is worth a look even if you're not a car person. It's fun, it's quirky, and there's a surprise or three in there for everyone, kids included. It's pretty much the main cultural reason to stop in the city rather than push straight through.
