South Island ▷ Mount Cook - MacKenzie ▷
Honestly, if there's one region in the South Island where having your own wheels makes a real difference, it's this one. The MacKenzie sits right on the popular Queenstown Region to Christchurch bus tour corridor, and you'll feel that. Having a campervan means you can operate on a completely different schedule to the tour buses, get into places like White Horse Hill Campground before everyone else, and actually stay put when the weather is playing ball.
The shuttle between Lake Tekapo, Twizel and Mt Cook is a solid option if you're without your own vehicle. It's a practical connector for the main stops and gets good marks for being friendly and convenient. But it won't give you the freedom to duck up the Tasman Valley on a whim, or time your Hooker Valley start for before sunrise. That kind of flexibility is really what this region rewards.
If you are on a bus or shuttle, just know that the key sites like the Church of the Good Shepherd at Tekapo get absolutely swamped during peak hours. Sunrise and sunset visits are worth engineering your schedule around, whatever transport you're on.
