The Landscape Does Most of the Work

Central Otago's natural attractions are less about single headline spots and more about the landscape you move through. The SH85 and 87 corridor is the thing here. Wide open country, big skies, and that slow-burn feeling of being genuinely off the beaten track. It trumps an extra day in the Queenstown Region or Wanaka Region for me every time.

Blue Lake and the Ida Valley

The Blue Lake walk at St Bathans is an easy 45-minute loop or just a spot for a swim. It's quietly beautiful and barely promoted, which is part of the appeal. Further along, the Ida Valley is proper Power of the Dog country. Huge expanse, barely a soul around, and the Ophir Historic Bridge is there when you need a reason to stop and stretch.

This isn't dramatic scenery that announces itself. It's the kind of place that gets under your skin slowly, which is exactly why you want to do it in a campervan.
