Stayed here on our first vanlife night.

Plenty of space and a good first night base. Decent toilets and level spots :) - follow @milly0nthem0ve on IG/YT for all things travel

Great campsite right at the waterfront.

Lots of parking spaces and toilets are open during the night. No fresh water. Try the local fish and chips. They are amazing.

This was one of our favourite freedom camping sites in our travels around NZ but there are a couple things you should know.

The signs clearly show the spaces where freedom camping vehicles are allowed (beyond the yellow line) but there were a number of campers parked outside of this (easily double the 10 spaces permitted), however we never saw any enforcement take place. The signage also says no trailers / caravans but there are several of them parked and some of them to appear to have been there quite some time and we assumed some are 'permanent' residents. The lighting overhead is quite bright so you will want to have good curtains to block it out while sleeping. The location is great, nice view of Auckland city in the distance at night and very quiet once the last of the ferry commuters leave. No issue with the washrooms.

Cool, quiet place for our 1st night in van.

The place, it's at the end of Marina. There is a lot of spaces.

Clean toilets, no drinkable water. Public light.

    Dumping station available.

    Arrived here around 1am.

    Loved this spot

I was worried if we could be able to find any free spots, but there were heaps. Great location, right by the sea. Toilets are clean and open 24/7. It was written than we should leave by 10am but we stayed longer so did the other campervans and no one said anything.

This has been our favourite spot in our 3 weeks trip around northland.

Not too far from Auckland, right on the waters edge and next to a beach and stream. Toilets were nice enough, bins and dump station. There is a burnsco and laundry a few minutes away and coast shopping centre 10 minutes in the car and Silverdale 20 minutes. We loved the views and the atmosphere. We stayed again on our way back down.

A very busy spot, all the freedom camping spots were taken (and then campers overflowing into the Norma bags) so we had to move on unfortunately.

Beautiful view, toilets a bit dirty but all good and a dump station.

The picture with the marked places is irritating.

There are 10 places (marked with yellow stripes and a sign). The toilets are ok and there is a dump station for Grey and Black water but no fresh water. Also trash bins . Good 4G reception.

Stayed for two nights at this campsite and had a very enjoyable experience.

The bathrooms were clean and always open when we needed them. There are ten official freedom camping spots; but there were campers all spread out near that section (it is off season so this may have been the reason for relaxed rules). We had a beautiful view of fin rock and left our van in the parking lot over night while we stayed over on tiritiri Matangi island feeling perfectly safe that it would be okay. There is a marina cafe and even a British cafe that sells pasties! Had a great time and would definitely recommend this freedom camping spot to others.

Plenty of spots when we arrived and free.

Toilets were decent but they were locked after around 10pm, it did say 24/7 so not sure why (maybe for maintenance). Amazing sunsets, could see out over to Auckland.

In the morning the car park was full when we woke up with boaters/fishermen, was a little noisy but worth it for the sunset.

I am not sure about this freedom camp on your map.

At the end of the road very close to the ferry is a signed place for 10 camper, toilet is nearby.

This is no longer a freedom camping spot - the car park is full of signs that say no overnight camping/caravans allowed.

There were lots of campers there but we chose not to stay to avoid getting kicked out in middle of night. We have heard that car parks across the country are being patrolled by local councils at the minute so was not worth the risk to stay.

Clean bathrooms and a dump station. VERY windy though, so pack a warm jumper if you want to go for a walk along the beach!
