zoomThis is a Hurunui Council campsite situated at Amberley Beach. The campsite is split into two areas with a mixture of powered and non powered sites, toilets, caravan/camper van waste dump station, BBQ’s, childrens playground, tennis court and backboards - the primo family place.
There is an honesty box system for people to pay their fees - please do as it is so cheap to stay here and it would be great to keep it this way!

Whenever we visit ChCh we travel to Amberley to camp overnight.
We usually arrive late. Last weekend we saw the gates down and read the very complicated instructions beside the gate.
By now, all the shops were closed. We do not do apps on cellphones. We had to drive away and stayed elsewhere. So from a lovely uncomplicated $5 overnighter with our dogs and visiting the wonderful people in the Amberley shops ie supermarket and post office, garage etc, we now will not be returning. It was good while it lasted.

We come up to Christchurch several times a year from Dunedin, after trying a few different places we would regularly drive the extra distance and use this camp ground as it was in a lovely area, out of
the way and we had dogs with us. It used to be so easy, put your money in the envelope and into the lockbox and put the paper slip in your window. Too easy! The last time we went there was some new foundations at the gateway. This time there were big electronic barriers blocking it all and you had to get some AP on your phone and a digital tag from a shop (It was 9pm at night!). It was a total disappointment really. Why make it so hard? Totally unwelcoming look and unnecessarily complicated. We won't be back and that unfortunately means we won't be there spending money in Amberley in the evenings and the morning either.

You need to buy a key from a shop in town then go online and pay $20 to top it up, then you can unlock the gate, very little reception to do this.
And honestly the place is a bit of a dump! And I’m so not fussy I’m happy sleeping in the bush.

This was a brilliant find on our way north to Hanmer, so much so that we stayed here on the way back too.
Flushing toilets, sinks and hand driers in the bathrooms, flat sections, playground and tennis courts, and just a minute across to the beach. Nice and sheltered and fantastic price point. We went unpowered for $5 per adult, but powered sites were also available for $18 per campervan.
Fantastic brewery with wood fire pizzas 5kms back up the road, a great place for dinner if you are wanting a change from BBQ dinners!

Small/medium campsite with clean toilets, dump station and water.
All the basics. Nice quiet location next to the beach. Choose your own location so you can be as social or as private as you want! Supermarket down the road. Highly recommended to avoid the tourist trap!

A very quiet place, cheap as $5 for unpowered spot 1 person/van.
Got busier as the evening came on so for the spot you want i’d reconmend pilling in by 6pm latest. There are two ends (North and South). Close to beach and some nice little walks. Toilets clean but overall the place is a little outdated however a cheap stay so no complaints.

Lovely spot at amberley beach.
We Camped at southend on south cres with our dog. Was lovely and quiet and relaxing. The other campers, some longterm, were lovely and very helpful. Its managed by kiwicamp with an electronic gate $20 per night, so we felt quite secure. Only downside was where we had camped we could clearly see there were several hidden cameras facing right into the camp in the hedge from a neighbouring property. We could see the infrared at night that gives them away. Very disturbing to know someone is watching you and surprised this is allowed in a public place with no signage, so we only stayed one night. Just beware of the south end of south camp.

Stayed with a dog and as requested kept on a lead and picked up after.
Some of the many permanent camper's had dogs, and they roamed about and messed anywhere and everywhere. No one cleaned up. Won't be back

Two big yards.
Clean, good value for money and ok if you have nowhere else to go for the night. Setting is nothing special, though it is a short walk to a shingle beach.
We were there in high summer and found the ground super hard when it came to setting up a tent - definitely bent a few pegs.
A clean and cheap option if you're passing through.

Two very large areas on the left and right side of the road.
Right side is for dog owners. It has toilets and is where the dump site is situated. There are also two or three power posts each with 3 or 4 power points. Left (north) side is also very large with 3 power posts each with 4 power points. The toilets are newer on this side but no dump site. Neither site has pressurised town supply water that we could find apart from at the dumpsite. The blue honesty box for both sites is well in from the street in the left hand (north) side. Please be sure to pay as $15 for two people for this sort of camp is quite cheap. It also has CCTV camera's so the sites are very safe. While in Amberley we had a $12 lunch time special steak meal that was excellent value at the Amberley Hotel. Their other prices are quite reasonable as well.
