Perfect place to chill, mind the mount maulers in the dry sand, use a good bug repellent.

Free showers, didn't notice the trains too much. A couple of picnic tables would be good. Clean and friendly

Nice site with a great beach nearby, lovely hearing the waves all the time.

Heard a couple of trains throughout the night but for me it's kind of a novelty so I didn't mind haha. Pretty busy when we came and not many spots available but the facilities were in reasonable condition and overall we had no complaints

It's now $20 for a site, up to 2 adults and 2 children included in that price.

4 free warm showers and 4 toilets on site. No kitchen facilities. A beautiful beach and a small river to swim in. Some road and train noise but you can still hear the waves crashing 🙂

Great spot right on the beach.

So close you can hear the waves crashing. $8 per person can not complain and lots of room. It is right next to a train line and just of the main road but the noise is not that bad at all.

Nice place, but a bit expensive for its location (5m to rail and 10 to highway).

16$ for 2adults +2children but it is a 'minimum' so even if I was alone I had to pay full price.. :| at least shower surprised me, because it looks like they are not coin operated anymore, had very good hot shower in windy cold night

    Sat-Sun night, Jan 2019 2 adults with a rental car & tent.

This place saved us from a sleepless night, as this was the only non-gated place which we found at 01 AM around Tauranga. Its operated by the district council and is non-staffed/self-service. You get a receipt of a sorts when you pay (16$ minimum charge, allows 2 adults+car+tent), and it might be checked in the morning, but wasn't when we stayed.

IMO, very decent facilities for the price: garbage bin, two clean toilets with water, one hot shower, tiny cracked mirror and multiple water points but NO drinking water.

Lots of folk: on arrival, out of 33 spaces maybe 4 were vacant.

Noisy site: it is between a 80 km/h road & railroad and the sea. Not much traffic but enough & waves crashing so that earplugs were necessary.

Clean facilities, flushing toilet and located right on the sand dunes.

Small town of Matata is down the road with a dairy, takeaway and bottle shop. Stay here if you want to relax by the seaside and not do much else. And bring bug spray, I got slammed while sun baking!!

Lovely campsite right on the beach, tranquility slightly dampened by noisy road and trains but quieter at night.

Good place for beach fishing. Hot showers available for $1. Good overnight stop.

A really nice campsite, with flush toilets, hot showers for $1, facilities very clean, shaded campsites, can see the beach and ocean from campsite.

Really enjoyed our stay, only downfall is the camp is beside the main road and a railway line with frequent trains, however that didnt worry us and we will go back there. Also fishing appears to be good off the beach from what I saw the weekend we stayed. Price very reasonable, $15.50 for 2 adults and 2 kids. Run by the Whakatane District Council
