A very spacious place next to a small river.

Enjoyed a good night's sleep. The area is well-maintained, including the road. The journey here was quite enjoyable, and it's a good, quiet place to rest. Many tables are available, and fires are permitted. Note that there's no signal anywhere on this field. Use the toilet only if absolutely necessary; it's a metal pipe with a toilet seat on top. Remember to bring toilet paper with you.

Huge amount of space, DOC toilet hut with a couple of trees next to a beautifully clear stream.

The campsites here are pretty remote.

The road is a little over 10k in total with the first camp at about 3k and the second at the end of the road. From there a series of trails lead through a beautiful forest. There is also a DOC hut with 12 bunks about halfway down the road. We were there in Autumn '15 and the road was pretty bad in spots with lots of potholes and ruts cut out by water runoff. I would not drive a campervan down this road in the condition it was in. If you have 4WD or a truck with clearance and decent tyres you should be fine and will likely have the place to yourself. We also attempted the area trails via River Road and found evidence of several busted windows in the bushes. It might be best to approach the area from the southern trailhead and campgrounds.

Remote camping area where you could be the only person there.

Road in was very rough and slippery so would pay to check at DOC office in Murupara the road conditions if you have a 2wd vehicle.

    Great fishing and walking opportunities

Good campground and a super place for fly-fishing.
