Information

Matiri Valley & 1000 Acre Plateau Tracks

Time: 25 min - 2 hrs return depending on walk taken.

It is a 3 hour walk to Lake Matiri. From there you can do overnight tramps to 1000 Acre Plateau.

From the carpark it is 3 km to the West Branch Matiri River which in normal flow is easily crossed. Be aware that this river can rise rapidly and become impassable with rain in the headwaters.

Once across the West Branch, continue across farmland beside the river before entering forest and climbing the face of a slip brought down by an ancient earthquake.

The track levels and soon reaches Lake Matiri Hut overlooking the tranquil Lake Matiri.

Roadend to Lake Matiri Hut
Time 2WD: roadend to Lake Matiri - 3 hr
Time 4WD: roadend to Lake Matiri - 1.5 hr

Warning: The West Branch Matiri River and a section of the track between the West Branch Matiri River and the Matiri Hut can rapidly become impassable after rain in the headwaters. The track should not be attempted in these conditions.

tHE INFORMATION ON THIS SITE IS OUT OF DATE.

WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE MATIRI HYDRO SCHEME YOU NOW HAVE GOOD 2WD ACCES TO THE WEST BRANCH. THIS LEAVES ABOUT ONE AND A HALF HOURS WALK TO THE LAKE ON A MUCH BETTER TRACK.

Very hard, very steep climb from the lake but a stunning plateau area at the top, huts, night sky up there is amazing.

    Took us three days.

Take your own tent. Not many other people around when we went last January. A change from the Great Walk crowds. Plateau large and worth a visit.
