Stayed here in a campervan on a Friday night in November.

We arrived here at about 4.30pm thinking there might be nowhere to park as we were a bit confused by some of the previous reviews. There are loads of spaces and at the time, only one other campervan parked here. It is clearly marked along Broadpark Road that self-contained vehicles can park in the bays along this road (facing the park in front). Don’t get this confused with the car park by the beach as this isn’t for freedom campers. Toilets are in the park. There was a bit of a grimy feel to these loos as they’re public loos and quite rundown, but the actual toilet itself was clean. No soap and the sink would fill up so we had to sometimes wash our hands in our campervan. The parking bays are also used by cars and it was full with cars when we woke up the next morning but shouldn’t be an issue for those arriving late at night. Close to beach and the park has swings, slides etc which are good for kids. No issues with noise and felt fairly safe.

    IMPORTANT : the regulation changed!

The 3 parkings in this map are now forbidden and it’s clearly written by a no parking sign! We saw a lot of vans parked despite the sign. They are exposed to a 200$ fine. But there are lots of parking along the same road when you can park for free. You have to check the freecamp map on the city’s website and you will see in green the free zone!!

There is a beach close by, but we didn’t look at it, very windy, and the sand kept being blown into our eyes.

Didn't have time to wait for wind to die down. Where to park on the Rankers website has signage on one side of the car park saying NO Camper Vans, so we did not want to risk a parking fine.

We then looked on the Christchurch Freedom Camping website, and the next car park along Broad Park Road which had the Pegasus Bay Track running from it, was OK for up to 2 night parking. There is a track running from it to the toilets, and an outside shower. Rated 8 as no view.

This is probably the best free camp spot in Christchurch.

It’s right next to the beach and surrounded by grass areas. There is drinking water and a cold outdoor shower right beside the camping area. There is also a toilet and shower block 50 meters away.

To get here you need to drive to the end of Broadpark Road and turn right through the gate. Camping is prohibited in the other surrounding areas.
