North Beach Car Park

Freedom camping prohibited at weekends (7pm Fridays – 7pm Sundays) between 1 October and 1 May.

At other times, freedom camping is allowed for up to two nights within any 30-day period. Certified self-contained campervans only.

Regular monitoring and enforcement. Fines apply. See ccc.govt.nz/camping for the Council map and surrounding City Coastal Freedom Camping Restricted Zone.

Camping in a public place in a tent or a vehicle without certified on-board facilities is banned throughout Christchurch district, including Banks Peninsula. If you want to camp in a non-self-contained vehicle or a tent, you need to stay at a camping ground where there are facilities you can use.

Note that there is an alcohol ban in public places along Marine Parade, including North Beach Car Park.

It's just a carpark and it's a bit difficult to find the sign that it is allowed besides it is not allowed between 1.october till 1.may but just at the weekend so from Friday till Sunday

Very popular car park for freedom camping but lots of space a long the road, various places to park up, though this is the best space as it has clean, well lit and flushing toilets.

Even in May (shoulder season) the car park was full so come early in high season. A few odd individuals in the car park with us, not had this problem at any other free camping

Quite noisy right by the street and people coming along in the night screaming or honking to wake you up on purpose.

Has beach acces tho. Toilets around not really clean and no soap. Wouldn't stay again.

Easy to find and plenty of well labeled freedom camping spaces.

    Close to beach too.

Loads of lay bys on marine parade for self contained units.

All look fairly new. All side of the beach with great access.

    Easy to find.

We found this area very busy for a Thursday night. This park appears to be a popular parking area for all types of visting & local vehicles. With that in mind road, people and vehicle noise is a consideration. Public toilets were easy to access, well lit up and clean. We would park elsewhere in future.

Great spot but the signage in the Surf Lifesaving Club car park is extremely ambiguous!

Parked on Friday night to the left of a sign with a clear arrow pointing right that was indicating that no camping was allowed Friday 7pm to Sunday 7pm. The warden had spoken to us the previous evening and said “fine” Was then woken up at 6am by two other wardens! They said that their colleague was badly informed and as the sign was unclear didn’t fine me but…… beware! Otherwise OK

Probably the freedom campsite with the best view along New Brighton beach.

Right by the toilets. Great views of the sunrise. The toilets do have the noisiest tap I have ever heard - it sounds like a giant bunker door opening. However, it wasn't used while we were sleeping so didn't disturb us.

    IMPORTANT : the regulation changed!

The 3 parkings in this map are now forbidden and it’s clearly written by a no parking sign! We saw a lot of vans parked despite the sign. They are exposed to a 200$ fine. But there are lots of parking along the same road when you can park for free. You have to check the freecamp map on the city’s website and you will see in green the free zone!!
