Worth a Stop Before You Head In

The DOC Visitor Centre in Te Anau is genuinely useful if you're planning to tackle any of the hikes along the Milford Road or beyond. The rangers know the tracks firsthand, which matters when you're deciding between something like a walk to Lake Marian and the more serious Gertrude Saddle route. Current conditions, hut bookings, that sort of thing. Worth 20 minutes of your time.

The iSite next door covers the broader planning side. Fiordland has a lot of moving parts, especially if you're trying to time your Milford drive around the buses or lock in an early Doubtful Sound cruise before the Queenstown tour groups arrive. Staff are helpful and the advice is free, which stacks up well.
