We rented a Mad Camper Tracker for two weeks in the South Island and loved it.
Lots of room on the inside, but small enough on the outside to easily park in regular spaces. The electrical system is incredible, with great charging and battery storage and multiple types of plugs in all the corners. We never really needed to plug in, even running a CPAP all night. We never used the hot water heater or shower, but did use the diesel heater to take off the morning chill and it worked great. Due to an error on our part we had to use the roadside assistance. Both the Mad Camper staff and the roadside assistance were very responsive and helpful and took care of the problem quickly. Every day my wife kept saying "I love this camper."

Mad Campers are the best!
I rented one of their one-person campers back in 2020 and loved it so much that when I got home I actually modeled my own NV200 camper van after their design. It was such a smart, simple setup.
Because of the situation in 2020, I had to return my camper a few days early to get out of the country before things shut down. At the time they told me that if I ever came back, they would credit me for the unused days.
Fast forward to my recent trip back to New Zealand... I only needed a car this time, and they had a small Toyota SUV that was perfect. True to their word, they honored the credit from 2020.
Great vehicles, responsive communication, and most importantly, an honest company that stands behind what they say. I highly recommend Mad Campers for anyone traveling in New Zealand.

It was nearly faultless. The van (Mad Explorer) was amazing, felt pretty newly renovated and ran like a dream. The team were very quick at replying to emails and always on hand to help. We did the Mad Challenge and got a fair chunk of money back at the end. Everyone we spoke to was so helpful and friendly and kind. Only fault was our back door seal leaked - Helpfully we were passing through Christchurch that day so we organised to fix it within an hour. They even leant us a car so we could go the the supermarket while we waited. So a slight hiccup made good! Also while we were there, one of the staff gave us a tip to change our route and go somewhere more off grid, which turned out to be a top recommendation. I could not rate Mad Campers highly enough. They are a company small enough to care, and doing it well. We also got a t shirt to take home which reminds us of our trip. So good in every way, they made our two weeks in the van a real joy and so easy and stress free. Honestly i can’t praise them enough and will recommend to anyone visiting NZ

Abbiamo preso un auto con tenda montata sul tettuccio per due, compresa di piccola cucina a gas, frigo, lavabo con acqua, tavolo e due sedie da campeggio. La tenda è completamente attrezzata: cuscini, lenzuola, asciugamani. Super comfortable! L’auto era una fantastica RAV4. Unici difetti: l’auto é poco fornita in termini di caricabatterie per telefoni e navigatore (infotainment un po’ vecchiotto). Per il resto, esperienza che rifarei domani stesso, consiglio vivamente a tutti.

We recently enjoyed a three-week campervan trip to explore NZ's north and south islands.
We booked Mad Camper's new model (the Mad Explorer) and had an absolutely amazing experience with the company. From the outset, we could tell that Mad Campers is incredibly thoughtful in everything they do - they gave us an introductory walk-through of the vehicle and the written instructions provided in the van were super clear. We had never stayed in a campervan before but the equipment and instructions they provided made living in the van smooth and straightforward for everything from using the kitchen to emptying waste water, etc. The Mad Explorer was so thoughtfully and efficiently designed, and it was very comfortable for two people. In addition, there were so many little touches provided by the team (e.g., welcome NZ chocolate and mad campers t-shirts) and with the van (e.g. oil, salt and pepper for cooking, great cookware and utensils, comfy bedding and towels) that made our experience a true 10/10. During our entire trip, we only encountered one small issue, and the team was immediately reachable and very helpful in supporting us to troubleshoot when this happened (it turned out the kettle provided was too high of a voltage for the circuit -- a really minor and easy issue to work-around). We can't recommend this company highly enough -- book with Mad Campers and try out the Mad Explorer!!!

I have had a wonderful holiday in Pakiri Beach Mad Camper 1 adventuring solo round Northland NZ. Your mad campers 1 was the absolutely perfect way to do this.
I loved everything about my van..it was all very easy...storage great, fridge brill and kept things really cold, cooker and gas, water etc so easy. The simplicity of living she offered restored my soul. It was great to feel I was simply driving a car. THANKYOU for the genius of creating this camper.
Also to say I found your supportive, relaxed style wonderful and Connor was fantastic....information, introducing me to the van, questions on route etc. Just excellent. Nothing was a problem or too much.
Highly recommend Mad Campers as a fantastic way to travel and adventure.

Madcampers was absolutely awesome.
I have never used a campervan before and I rented the MAD1 as I was travelling alone. Due to some weird travel issues I had to pick it up a couple days later and they were very helpful with working with me on that. Once I got the camper, it was very comfy and easy to use. I was also happy it was easy to drive as I am from the USA and had to get used to driving on the other side of the road. When it came to cooking, I am not very experienced using a gas bottle stove, but it was easy to set up and took me less than a minute. I cooked most of my meals on it and it felt great to have that freedom. I would definitely use them again if I came back this way.My only comment would be that the provided fridge sometimes wouldnt get cold enough so I added some ice to it. Still, amazing time.
