We had the trip of our lifetimes in our van and it became our home for 4 weeks, travelling over 5000kms.

The vans are cosy, cute and super easy to drive.

We recently enjoyed a three-week campervan trip to explore NZ's north and south islands.
We booked Mad Camper's new model (the Mad Explorer) and had an absolutely amazing experience with the company. From the outset, we could tell that Mad Campers is incredibly thoughtful in everything they do - they gave us an introductory walk-through of the vehicle and the written instructions provided in the van were super clear. We had never stayed in a campervan before but the equipment and instructions they provided made living in the van smooth and straightforward for everything from using the kitchen to emptying waste water, etc. The Mad Explorer was so thoughtfully and efficiently designed, and it was very comfortable for two people. In addition, there were so many little touches provided by the team (e.g., welcome NZ chocolate and mad campers t-shirts) and with the van (e.g. oil, salt and pepper for cooking, great cookware and utensils, comfy bedding and towels) that made our experience a true 10/10. During our entire trip, we only encountered one small issue, and the team was immediately reachable and very helpful in supporting us to troubleshoot when this happened (it turned out the kettle provided was too high of a voltage for the circuit -- a really minor and easy issue to work-around). We can't recommend this company highly enough -- book with Mad Campers and try out the Mad Explorer!!!

I have had a wonderful holiday in Pakiri Beach Mad Camper 1 adventuring solo round Northland NZ. Your mad campers 1 was the absolutely perfect way to do this.
I loved everything about my van..it was all very easy...storage great, fridge brill and kept things really cold, cooker and gas, water etc so easy. The simplicity of living she offered restored my soul. It was great to feel I was simply driving a car. THANKYOU for the genius of creating this camper.
Also to say I found your supportive, relaxed style wonderful and Connor was fantastic....information, introducing me to the van, questions on route etc. Just excellent. Nothing was a problem or too much.
Highly recommend Mad Campers as a fantastic way to travel and adventure.

Madcampers was absolutely awesome.
I have never used a campervan before and I rented the MAD1 as I was travelling alone. Due to some weird travel issues I had to pick it up a couple days later and they were very helpful with working with me on that. Once I got the camper, it was very comfy and easy to use. I was also happy it was easy to drive as I am from the USA and had to get used to driving on the other side of the road. When it came to cooking, I am not very experienced using a gas bottle stove, but it was easy to set up and took me less than a minute. I cooked most of my meals on it and it felt great to have that freedom. I would definitely use them again if I came back this way.My only comment would be that the provided fridge sometimes wouldnt get cold enough so I added some ice to it. Still, amazing time.

We had a great experience with Mad Campers.
The staff was really polite and answered all our questions both online and in person. The van worked well, it had everything advertised and it was in pretty good shape.
We only had one issue with the van and it was that the fridge didn't work when the van was not running (probably some electrical issue with the connection to the second battery) but it did work when the van was on (i.e., when we were driving). Unfortunately, we realised this a couple of days after we had started our trip and given that it was during the end of year holidays and we were pretty far from Christchurch already they couldn't do anything about it when we called them. This was a bit annoying but it didn't ruin our experience. They were very sorry about this issue and gave us a significant refund once we returned the van so all in all it was a positive result.
We'd definitely rent from them again on our next trip.

Wow where do I start!
The team at Mad Campers are absolute legends! First of all, booking was a breeze and so cheap! The whole process was so easy, and Fer (Onehunga) made us laugh the entire time, took us on a thorough tour of our camper (we called her Cleo) and told us some tips and tricks for the road. We only had Cleo for a few nights but she did not disappoint! Cleo came kitted out with absolutely everything you could possibly think of, we basically just needed to bring our clothes and food to cook! And wine to drink of course. Cleo was super comfortable, warm, so roomy, and so stylish! She got us everywhere we wanted to go! Just want to say a big thanks to the down to earth crew at Mad Campers for enabling us to live that kiwi dream we're all chasing! Cant wait to book again!

The Mad2 is a Great Campervan with the best service you can imagine.
The car has everything you need and we had a lot of fun driving around with it. Since the travel situation in New Zealand changed suddenly very fast due to Corona, they helped us with the rebooking of the ferry and were in close contact. That was a big help during that time! We would definitely recommend to book with Madcampers!

Had an amazing experience in our mad campers van for 11 days in the South Island.
The van is thoughtfully designed to have everything you need! We didn't use the toilet but it allows you to stay in a lot more campsites due to being self-contained. We had all inclusive insurance which took the pressure off but had no issues at all and mad campers made the pick up and drop off process very easy and we even got 5% refund for completing their challenge! Overall it was great, would recommend to anyone.

My partner and I spent 5 weeks in our amazing MAD 2 camper.
The Ultimate Fair-weather adventure van
We travelled one way ChCh to Auck. and loved every second. The van was incredibly reliable, and the engineering support was second-to-none (we broke our key and had to call them on Sunday evening; he picked up immediately and helped sort the problem!)
The MAD colleagues were awesome. They were genuinely passionate about camping, super helpful and really encouraged us to get involved with the MAD challenge (which was awesome)
Inside, the van has a clever set up, maximising space whilst keeping you in the outdoor lifestyle. It was self contained which allowed us to park pretty mush anywhere and cook, camp and enjoy NZ. The bed was comfy; we had adequate storage (especially with the top box), there was a fridge big enough for a few days provisions. The cooking space is great and the utensils perfect (my partners a bit of a snob when it comes to this but he loved the cooking stuff). The sink is small but adequate and the hose is a good addition.
Ultimate adventure van.
The price for our duration couldn't be beaten (believe me, I tried).
Things I wish I had known:
- Take a mosquito net/ hire the net from MAD. Sand flies are NZ version of the Scottish midgy/ hungry mosquitos
- Bunnings shop sell chairs super cheap. Buy these and also stretch to a table - we wished we'd done the latter
- We were incredibly lucky with good weather; the cooking and cleaning set up worked well for us but not sure how it would fair in poorer weather

The staff are very helpful on pick up and give a great introduction to the vehicle.
We had a technical issue whilst on the road and they were just a phone call away with assistance. The van itself was in good condition with almost everything you'd need provided from the team and also a great selection of left-over products to pick from at HQ. Downside would be we booked the canopy which was overpriced and never used as it just isn't practical when constantly on the move or even that easy to use.

I would absolutely recommend Mad Campers to everyone!
They were such a pleasure to work with from getting my first quote, to dropping my van off as t the end of my trip. Customer service was great, the van had everything we needed, and no complaints at all! Shoutout to Hannah and Elliot for being complete rockstars! Just a word to the wise, save your money and don’t bother with the canopy- it isn’t necessary, and really is a pain to set up. Also, the WiFi is mediocre at best, so probably best to pass on that too. There are I sites EVERYWHERE with info to get you around, and a map was completely adequate to get around since there aren’t many roads and the signage is awesome. Overall, everyone should rent with Mad Campers and have an amazing trip!!

Absolutely incredible company and team that I can’t recommend highly enough.

I did a last minute two week solo trip in a MAD1 and it was amazing. The camper was so well kitted out and every inch of space utilised. It was still pretty chilly at night during my trip but they’d provided a hot water bottle, fleece blanket and had doubled up on the duvets too so there was no issue there.
The camper itself felt super spacious inside and pulling the front seat forward at night made it feel even bigger. Being a solo traveller camper, so the size of a regular car, meant you could park almost anywhere and it was easy to drive on the windy NZ roads.
The bed was really comfortable and interior was spotless and smelt fresh, they clearly take their standards seriously and it definitely showed.
I loved the extra small touches like being provided with washing up liquid, cooking oil and laundry powder.
The team itself were amazing, always on hand when needed and able to organise additional activities at a discounted price on request. They were also able to give me lots of advice on the best hotspots to visit during my trip.
I’d definitely travel with them again.

Wow. We rented a campervan for a little over two weeks in February/March 2019 and had zero, and I truly mean ZERO issues.
The van was perfectly stocked, easy to drive, and SO cute. It was fun to wave to other Mad Campers on the road!! We also loved the way the back door opens up - we took full advantage of backing up to gorgeous views and enjoying a book, some lunch, or some wine.
Customer service was lovely as well, we had a small rock chip in the windshield and they made it so easy for us to resolve the issue.
Our time in New Zealand was an absolute dream, I can't wait to do it again and we will certainly be using a Mad Camper!!

I rent a van this winter during 2/3 weeks with Mad Campers and everything was perfect!
Great customer service, the staff was friendly and helpful, the van was the same than in the pictures. Everything we needed was there: plugs for the phone, battery for the fridge, cooking equipment... They even gave us extra blanket and hot-water bottles as we were travelling in winter! Moreover, the van is easy to drive and the size is not too big: we visited all the South Island with it and had no problem at all.
And the most important thing... The van is self contained so you don't have to worry, you can sleep in every campsite!

I had a great experience with Mad Campers.
Easy checkin, friendly staff, very thorough vehicle orientation. I had an older Nissan van, which showed its age but ran well with no problems. The vehicle was well equipped for my needs (solo travel on N Island in fall). Plenty warm at night up in the mountains.
One consideration: I'm nearly 2 meters tall, and while I fit in the drivers seat, my visibilty could have been better. I just obsessively checked my mirrors. Likewise, I fit on the bed just fine diagonally, but it would have been a tight squeeze with two people.

Smooth ride, helpful staff, fast respond to contact and amazing company, what else do you want from this?
The car might be smaller and no powered (though they have 2nd battery for your need if you want to charge or want to listen music while you sleep) than the other camper van out there, but if you're only going solo or couple, you could'n find a better company than this.

We rented a van from both Auckland and Christchurch.
The customer service was fantastic! All correspondences were done in a timely manor. My questions were kindly answered. The vans were clean and in good working order. I would highly recommend this company.

Great experience with Mad Campers!
The van rental cost exactly what we expected when it was all said and done, and it was great value. Great place to call home for 2 weeks, and a great way to see most of the South Island in a short time. The van was loud, and missing a few non-essential parts like plugs in the ceiling and 2 hubcaps, but it ran great and gave us no trouble in the up- or down-hills. We used the Rankers app's offline feature and word of mouth to find good campsites with bathrooms, and never used our van toilet. We found about 4 free campsites, 6 DOC campsites ranging between $8-13 NZD per person, and 2 holiday park nights for showers which were 17 and 28 NZD per person. All in all, it was a great trip and the van from Mad Campers was a big part of it going smoothly. I'd recommend them.

Our camping experience in Canterbury couldn’t have been easier with Mad Campers.
They arranged a pick up from Christchurch airport who helped us with our bags and took us to Mad HQ. We were shown around the camper, given free T-shirt’s and Whittaker’s chocolate and with that were on our way! We thought for 6 days this was the ideal size for us as a vehicle with a place to rest our heads at the end of the day. We felt like a lot of thought went into fitting out the van, they made the most of the available space. Second battery that charged while you drive was great to charge our phones and the fridge etc. We didn’t run out of battery but we switched things off when they weren’t in use. We didn’t use the toilet, and didn’t make any meals using gas so I can’t comment on those facilities.
The bed was easy to set up. Mattress was alright, but nothing beats your own bed at home.
At the end of our trip we were taken back to the airport and service both ends was good.
Service by phone and email to Mad Campers was excellent. Would definitely recommend for short trips or minimalist campers!

We loved our Mad Camper van!
We drive it all over the South Island for five weeks and had a great experience. The van was clean, smart, well organized, and fun. We received great information and instructions about using everything in the van. We never had any mechanical problems of any kind. The staff is friendly and responsive. We never used the toilet provided; we decided to just use public toilets and campground toilets. I would highly recommend Mad Campers!!

My Wife and I rented a 2 berth Campervan from Mad Campers, and were extremely pleased with our experience!
From the time of check-in & orientation, to the minute that we returned the van to Christchurch......there was always a Staff member to assist and answer any questions. The excellent customer service ratings was the main deciding factor for us, and this crew did not disappoint! We are from the United States, and we are "Van Campers" here, so this type of rental was right up our alley. Two of us traveling with one large backpack each and smaller carry on backpacks, and we had plenty of room for everything. Our journey began at Christchurch, and from there we toured the South Island for 10 days. The Van (we nicknamed him "Frodo") was a great size, and got really good gas mileage. It also had an extremely tight turning radius, something that was very useful in tight campgrounds and parking lots. We had a minor issue with a circuit breaker that was linked to the auxiliary battery, but the Mad Campers team responded immediately to our calls, and helped us to get this issue resolved quickly. Recently, they added the rooftop box and rack to each 2 berth van at no charge, and this was a HUGE help! We were able to store our table, chairs, and toilet atop the vehicle.....which left more room in the main cabin. We had extremely great weather during our visit, and spent very little time in the van except for sleeping and driving. This allowed us to keep the bed assembled the entire time, and we used the sofa/table configuration minimally. If you are a couple that wants to travel with minimal gear, and travel light and fast.....these guys are for you! Thanks to the Mad Campers Team!
