Hired a motorhome for two weeks to travel around the South Island.

Our motorhome was nearly new. Very comfortable. No issues. So easy to drive. Made our holiday one of the best. Christchurch Mc Rent staff were helpful and very friendly when picking up and returning vehicle. Everything went very smoothly.

Highly recommend Mc Rent. Would definitely hire from them again.

I got lucky because the vehicle was brand new.

The facilities were pristine. The newness factor contributed to some minor hiccups which fortunately didn't impact me significantly (check for hose attachments and test all the barrel locks on the RV before setting off).

If you are tall, I suggest requesting the same RV layout with the corner bed. I am tall (6'2" or 188cm), and this bed worked well for me while parked on even land.

I submitted my DL and all info before arrival and paid for the extra insurance/peace of mind. Pickup was quick, friendly, and helpful. Drop-off was lively with more workers and customers around. I made sure everything was in great condition, emptied, and clean before return, and I had no issues or complaints about extra fees or charges ($0).

There could've been improved documentation on places to dump grey water near Pōkeno. It's helpful to use water for cleaning the day of drop-off. Based on my adventure to that point, I thought finding a dump station would be straightforward, and even gave myself a few extra hours. However, I struggled to contact gas stations or campgrounds within 1hr of Pōkeno specifically for grey water dumping.

I believe McRent should provide their own dump station without the added anxiety at the tail-end of a trip. Black water is easier with the portable container.

The taxi was free via a 3rd party (from/to the airport and surrounding area), which was awesome because Pōkeno is far. The downside: the drivers aggressively marketed themselves and one called my phone several times during my trip. The latter kept questioning my drop-off point which I chose to save money and take my own taxi to get into Auckland, which was not complimentary.

My US tipping habits likely did me a disservice, but I would've preferred the ride without the interrogation (which I mistook for friendliness).

One of the positive points was the efficient handover of the motorhome.

The depot was very busy but the system worked well. We had a thorough, in person guide to the vehicle and all questions were answered helpfully. It was a good, personalised service. We were lucky enough to be allocated a brand new motorhome.

There were quite a few negatives. Before our trip our flights were slightly amended. Mcrent were unhelpful and inflexible when we asked to alter arrangements slightly, with blunt responses verging on rude. No flexibility was offered. We asked for 2 complimentary transfers of a few minutes at drop off, rather than the policy of one at pick up and one at drop off. This was offered, but then withdrawn. We discovered a hole in the grey waste pipe, possibly stone damage on our journey. The cost for repair that we were charged seemed very high. The adblu supplied with the motorhome was provided with a hose not compatible with its container, so we couldn't use it. 2 seatbelts had been wrongly fitted and could not be used. We reported all these points at drop off but they were barely acknowledged. We spent time cleaning the motorhome as requested and it was immaculate. All in all it felt as if everything was very much in Mcrent's favour rather than customer focussed.

An excellent experience overall with our rental from McRent.

From the time we started investigating to dropping off the motor home, their staff were helpful, professional and cared about our trip. We were unable to pick up the van on the day we were suppose to due to mechanical issues. They gave us a rental car and covered our hotel and food expenses so we could proceed with our trip as planned. They had a driver bring the van to us when it was available. There was a small issue with the toilet, one call to them and they arranged a service at a nearby town at our convenience. They compensated us to our satisfaction at the end of the trip for the time we were without the vehicle. Overall the van was good quality, everything in good working order and well equipped. McRent is a highly recommended company from our perspective.

McRent made the RV pick-up and drop-off process convenient.

They also scheduled transportation to and from the airport for us. Their communication and responsiveness while we were on the road was great. The RV we rented looked new, clean and was the perfect size for the two of us. We had no problem driving it throughout the South Island of New Zealand.

The only negative comments we have are in regards to the walk-through of the RV at the time of pick-up. We felt it was a bit rushed and wasn't thorough enough. Be sure to ask a lot of questions and take photos of the RV before and after as well. Once we were on the road, we realized that the air conditioning didn't work and there was only one burner that worked on the stovetop. These issues should have been checked by their team prior to pick-up and communicated to us before we left. However, once we informed McRent of these problems at drop-off, we were both able to come to a resolution that worked for both parties.

Overall, we would be interested in booking another RV through McRent and suggest them to anyone who is looking for an RV to rent in New Zealand!

I would advise you avoid McRent.

I would advise you avoid McRent.

    This was our experience:

    * There was a warning light and dashboard message saying there’s an error with an airbag. Surely this makes the vehicle unsuitable for hiring out?!

    * The dashboard around the gear selector was loose. To select a gear, I had to hold the dashboard in with one hard while moving the gear lever with the other. This is very far from ideal when manoeuvring.

    * Only one loudspeaker worked, and that one was falling apart with the grill coming off. This was particularly frustrating as we wanted to listen to audio books while we travelled but we were unable to listen to anything at all. The audio module showed an error message about wiring problems.

    * The satellite dish didn’t work. It beeped, made noises like a motor is moving, then displays a red ‘error’ light. So no TV, no radio, no music, no audio books.

    * None of the steering wheel audio controls worked, but I guess that was unimportant as we couldn’t hear anything.

    * The dining table was badly damaged. We found out why the table has so many holes in it when the cupboard over the table opened as we were driving and the contents of the cupboard fall out onto the table. (Yes, there’s another hole in the table now)

    * One of the hinges on the toilet door was snapped. (The top one) That put additional strain on the remaining hinges

    * Seats were badly stained, especially the driver’s seat

    * Only one out of the three USB ports worked, meaning it was very difficult to charge our devices.

    * The fresh water hose didn’t have the correct fitting to enable us to get fresh water! We had to buy new fittings at our own expense.

It took many weeks of back’n’forth to get a very small amount of compensation for their poor service spoiling what should have been our holiday of a lifetime. Poor vehicle, terrible service.

Great company to rent from - found out about McRent from a friend.

At that point, only thought there were two major players in the market where we had rented from in the past. McRent beats both of these in terms of quality of van, layout, space; quick and easy pickup; great pre-pickup service and dropoff also went without a hitch. Would definitely rent again - love the two bunk set up at the back (and big garage doors)!

Hi, 20 days after returning the van I receive a invoice for damage I don't know about .

    please read my response below.

    Stay away from McReant.

Why am I receiving this Invoice for $2500?

It doesn’t list what was damaged on the awning?

There was no damage on it when I returned it.

I have paperwork signed from your staff listing what was damaged on the van.

The only damage was the lefthand review mirror and a vent for the fridge had fallen off.

The fridge vent not my fault

On pickup we were given the van with one Gas bottle empty. The water tank overflowed through the van, wetting

all our clothes and bags. For the next 2 weeks we could only half fill our water.

We paid for snow chains and got snow socks; they came apart the first time we used them, leaving us stuck on the side of the

road for 4 hours. We were refused entry to snow fields as snow socks are not allowed. Could not rent or buy chains because of the size no one on Queenstown had any. RAA told us that brand of snow socks are not to be used in NZ at all. We could not leave Queenstown as chains where required to drive to Dunedin and Milford Sound.

Because of McRents incompetents We lost one and a half days of skiing and lessons that would amounted to about $1500, and we did not see Milford Sound.

I have found that McRent was nothing but difficult.

We hired a campervan from McRent NZ in the winter school holidays (July 2021) and I cannot fault the campervan or their service.

The initial booking was made via email through the Auckland branch and then we collected the campervan from the ladies at the Christchurch branch. We had previously been sent video instructions for how things worked in the campervans that helped to prepare us for our journey and cut the time at pick up down.

We travelled in a group of 5 families and had 3 different models of campervans between us all - every model was great.

We had free transfers from the airport (and we didn't have to wait) and then we were shown through our campers that were all only about a year old. In the office they had a box of "leftovers" (grocery items that others had left behind when returning their campers) that we could pick from - great to grab some dishwashing liquid and salt/pepper etc!

The heating system was perfect to keep us cosy throughout our journey despite it being the middle of winter, and we stayed off-grid the entire time - not plugging in to power once. We freedom camped every night, and the travel during the day was enough to ensure the power was topped up.

We discovered our fridge wasn't working the first night (bad luck seeing as the campervan was only a year old) and were given a temporary fix (portable 12v cooler box) until they could replace the fridge the following day. We were refunded for our taxis and compensated for our time while it was fixed. We had no issues the rest of the trip.

The campervan was modern, equipped with everything we needed (except wine glasses and handtowels), and our kids loved the bunk beds at the back (we had a 6 berth). We loved the experience so much that we booked again to do another trip next year.

We used a McRent 6person campervan to travel around the South Island for two weeks & it was awesome!

We did over 3,000 k's & we were warm & comfortable the whole trip! We would have liked it if the bikes could have been on a bike rack outside of the van, but we made it work. Staff were friendly & helpful on pick up & drop off which helped too.
