    Location location location.

Nice little spot right over the dune from a gorgeous beach. We booked when we arrived without issue. One of our favorite sites we stayed at.

Beautiful place, but booking procedure could be more efficient.

    Booking procedure:

    1. Registration with Auckland council

    2. Book & pay campsite online ($21)

    3. Call council, provide all data and request access code

    4. Receive mail/text message with access code (took about 30 min)

    Absolutely, totally awesome place.

Views, waves, beach, got it all. So quite, only the early morning surfers disturb you, gets you motivated for a walk and sunrise shot. Toilets were very clean, tidy with loo roll. Dump station as well. Well worth the drive😊

Awesome spot for a few nights of peace and quiet, right next to an amazing stretch of beach.

Booking was quick and easy so had no issues with that and $20 can seem a bit steep but the toilet was very clean and ended up being cheaper than most DOC sites as there was 4 of us. Might have just been me but you need to push the keypad in once you enter the code - had to ring the council as thought the code was wrong!!

The road there is a very dusty and bumpy one but our 7m campervan handled it fine and was worth the effort to get to. As well as the main beach there is also a small sheltered beach to the right, which was good for the kids plus there’s a couple of short walks over the in the forest area. Can’t wait to go back if we’re up that way again.

$20 for a night for our family of 44.

Stunning beach setting - it's pretty spectacular to watch the waves crashing under the moonlight. There are flush toilets on site. BYO TP. Not super clean but the beach was packed so to be expected.

It pays to book online in advance so you can be sure of a spot and you have the gate code when you arrive.

    Really beautiful and isolated spot.

We were there with only one other van. It’s a rough road coming in but we did it a large motorhome so it can be done. Well worth stopping here

Was a really nice place to stay, the beach is really clean and nice with good surfing (no board hire) toilets were clean and spacious.

The stars were absolutely amazing at night and the whole area seemed safe and peaceful.

Only issues were that it was down a long unpaved track, which our camper didn’t love. It was also a bit of a pain to pay to stay there as you have to log in online to get a code to the gate. Said it was $10 each but a lady next to us said the minimum for a camper was $20 even if it’s just one of you which is quite expensive for what you’re getting.

Slight hassle for booking need to book online and then call council to get combo lock for gate but an absolute steal for $10 per person only facilities are toilets and dump stations but an absolute amazing

    spot right on the beach.

Great place to stay, right on the beach BUT it is no longer FREE!

Apparently you're supposed to book in advance and get a code to park behind a locked barrier. Cost is apparently 6$ per person. Security guy came around but was fairly apologetic about the system! There's also very poor phone coverage on the site so very difficult to call the required no.

    Great site with incredible views.

However, IT IS NOT A FREEDOM CAMP!!!!!!!! It used to be, but things changed. So, consider make your reservation within Auckland Council and pay the fee of $6 per person/night before you go. Yes, before! As the reception for mobile phones doesn't work properly on site. Furthermore, there is no administration or public phones to be used on site. Apart that, I had a great experience. Beautiful and peaceful beach... nice walks... amazing scenery.

    This place is beautiful!!

Long sandy beach and nice walking paths. Toilets are clean and close to parking. Surfing is great when the tide is right and swimming is cold but nice is you have a wet suit.

Free camping right on the beach access to Te Arai.

Long drive down rough gravel road but well worth it to have a huge beach almost all to yourself. Public washrooms.

For a free site it is well maintained.
