Information

North Tora Camping Area

Camp in this remote beach location within signposted areas for a maximum of 21 days.

WARNING - this campsite is open to overnight camping "at your own risk". The Council has put up signs warning campers of the risk of flooding in the areas, which are low-lying and close to both the sea and a river mouth. The rivers can rise rapidly and the area is also prone to storm surges. There is no alarm system so to mitigate the risk, campers are advised to keep an eye on the Council social media pages (Facebook and Instagram, where warnings will be published if MetService alerts the Council of risky conditions. MetService's heavy swell warnings service is also recommended.

What a great place to stay - we parked on a large grassed area.

So relaxing - would go back again

Right by the river with beach a very short walk over the dunes.

No sign of marked spaces or manmade surfaces. Some grass some sand and some dried but very squishy looking mud. Still avalable and free but absolutely no facilities and very little even ground. We parked at about noon ( the only ones there) looking for a restful afternoon and some stars.

Then the wind got up howling down the valley. It was so unpleasant that we bailed and went to Masterton.

    Would not go back.

Reasonable camping area close to both sea and river inlet, but not as quiet as we'd expected.

Approx 10 camping sites on flat ground, with bins but no local toilets or drinking water (nearest local toilets are at South Tora camping area, which is tents only). Beach is black sand to gravel, and river tends to be better to swimming and paddling.

Pretty clean and tidy, with a ranger checking in every day or so. Road to the camping area is mainly metalled, only gravelled towards the end. Surprising amount of traffic during the day, though quiet at night. Lots of surfers, fishing, motor boats passing through. Can get quiet windy in the camp area as the valley seems to funnel wind through from the coast.
