A nominal fee is charged. Pick up permit from Carterton District Council offices or Carterton Information Centre - $6-00 for 3 nights for upto 6 people at which stage another permit is required. Not sure it's still a campsite, but I slept here anyway.
Lovely little clearing with a compost toilet and some bins.
Great access to the river.

Free spot, very sheltered from most of the wind.
Can get very wet during winter or wet periods and it takes a bit of finesse to find a level park. Composting toilet and rubbish/recycling bins available. Only downside is the road noise but you soon get used to it.

Awesome little camp up.
Free in the off season. Great compost loos and waste/recycling bins. Short walk over the bridge to the Gladstone Inn - very friendly pub with awesome food. Only thing was a little road noise but not major.

Spent 2 nights camping in a tent here and found it very pleasant and would stay again.

Close to road so get some traffic noise

Large grassed reserve beside river for self contained vehicles only.
There are two reserves make sure you have the one just over the bridge from the Gladstone Pub- the other one further down river is a bit suspect.
