We had a powered site for our motorhome for one night and found most of the powered sites to be extremely narrow. We felt really packed in, being less than 1m away from the neighbouring motorhome. The non powered sites appeared to be a bit more spacious.
We would visit the area again however, I'd overnight elsewhere.

Thank you for your comments. However we must defend our powered sites. The park was "setup" in 2007. The powered sites were Council approved and in "those days" the vans were small. Maximum 5m and 2 1/2 persons wide. We are looking to move the sites with Council approval in the next to 2 winters.I don't know the size of your van you if really needing more space suggest next time you purchase a stay with us go for an 11M powered site, if in fact power is required for a 1 night stay. We have power points in the Amenities Block for things like computers and cell phones. Glad you enjoyed the stay and hope to see you back.Management

Good facilities - kitchen, common room, verandah ( good spot for some yoga) hot showers and laundry facilities ( need coins for both). Not many campers so very quiet. Walk to beach for sunset, very windy at beach but treated to seal pups playing in the pools. Staff friendly and helpful. Cafe on premises but we did not use. I note you have have not responded to my question.
So I will answer with what I have found out.
Our sites charges are in line with other camps in the area and in some cases cheaper. You do have a choice to stay or not. STAFF. We only have one staff member who unfortunately, when you were there was what we call "a bit under the weather" . He has just received some bad/sad news that a long time friend, who had only been hunting with a week prior, had unexpectedly passed away. His friends lived 10 hours drive away and it was not possible for him to go to the funeral. So hopefully you can forgive him for his situation on that night..

Best to avoid this place, it is overpriced, the campers are squeezed in like sardines, the camp manager has very little local knowledge to share, the toilets are embazoned with passive aggressive signage
, just a bad bad buzz all around and to top it off after paying $50 for a night you still have to pay for a hot shower. The cafe next door is not much better and should also be avoided, perhaps the worst service we have seen in NZ, the attendant pretty much just scowled at us and charged $24 for two coffees and average muffins. We gave 3 stars only for the wonderful animals that wander the camp - pigs, ducks and horses, they are pretty cool.

Thank you for your response. The camp was designed and built in 2007 and campervans then were a maximum of 5m in length and 1.5 persons wide. We are looking at restructuring, the camp but it can take up to 2 years for council to approve plans. I am not sure about your comment about the Camp Manager, he is very enthusiastic about the place he has lived there since 2007, he built the place. I feel you might have been talking about the staff member as the Camp Manager is very, very rarely in the office. The staff member has been at the park for 3 years or so and is full of information. The T & C are on the website it is your responsibility to check this out. You are told of the price, the showers, about waste, etc. about your site on arrival. Your comment on toilets make me wonder if you WERE in our park, because the signage is for your benefit really, not sure where you are coming from with your aggressive response. Your coffee...just take note of where you are, but actually our most expensive coffee is $5.50, I have just bought one in my town and it was same cost. It costs extra to have everything transported to us but our costs as in line with local towns. Once again remember where we are. OUR large Cafe/Restaurant was burnt to the ground at the start of Dec. It has been hard trying to bake at the house and comply with all Govt and Council laws and regulation. The attendant? everyone is allowed a bad day. MANAGEMENT

Thank you for your coments. By the cost of your stay you had a powered site. Some of those are small but are built to Council Regulations for the size of our area. Suggest as it is not peak season you could have gone back to the office and asked to change sites. We are in Drought, we have to be mindful of that the $2 for the 6 min shower is merely for water conservation not any other reason. The BBQ is a new aquisition and the cost you paid is only for the gas. Remember our location and how much extra it costs for us to have all our "disposables" including gas deilvered to us from 90+KM away. You can go to a park in Nelson and pay for the BBQ. Not sure what wasn't clean as you havent stated so I cant comment. Something that should have be bought up when at the park not when you left it.

Wow, what a gorgeous place!
So happy we took the effort driving all the way up north. The camp sites were rather small, but because we had no neighbours this was no problem. But I'm sure having close neighbours wouldn't have been a problem, because all people very nice and we shared some kind of 'end-of-the-world' feeling. Toilets were long drops, but in regular toilet setting with no smell. The shared kitchen and dining area were very charming and a nice spot to meet people. From the campsite, you reach the charming Archway cafe, where you could enjoy a nice coffee in a hammock or sitting on a tree table/chair. From here the absolutely stunning Wharakiki beach walk began. Please go!

Hi, while i did not stay at the campsite i feel obliged to share the experience i had with one of the owners.
This occurred today Thursday 22nd nov 2018.
I was travelling with my 70 yo father and 72 yo uncle and had walked to Wharariki beach which was completely amazing. We were so impressed we decided to head to cape farewell via the hill top route which is not a very well sign posted track. After getting there we couldn't find a proper track to get us back to our car so decided to follow the farm fence line back. We were a bit lost. Finally after about an hour we were relieved to end up at the rear of the Wharariki campsite. This was adjacent to the main road where our car was parked. We had crossed the stream only to be confronted by a heavily tattooed guy with a beer in hand that was clearly drunk and very agressive. He asked if we were staying at the campsite and i explained that we were not but that we had been lost and wished to get back to our car. He told us too f### off back up the hill and that the campsite was private property for paying guests only. He was basically looking for a fight.
Anyway we walked back to the beach not wanting an altercation which took us another 1.5 hrs. I stopped at the campsite office on our way out to explain what had happened. They did not appologise but said they knew who it was and would sort it out.
I am a kiwi and i was shocked at the thought that this experience could occur to an international visitor. This is not what New Zealand is or what kiwis are about.
I will let you make the decission whether to stay here or not. As i said we were fortunate enough not to have stayed there.
Hope you enjoy New Zealand.

Hello Nick, It is very disturbing to read your email, as it in no way reflects owner of the parks passion and ability to run his business with respect to campers and or others who enter the grounds. The owner of the park was "off- site" on the day of your visit. The person we believe you had your altercation with is merely a person who often comes to the park for short periods during summer. We sincerely apologise for the actions of this person who has been severely reprimanded and has now left.

Not sure when you came as this site doesn't show that. Thanks for your reveiw, we are 8 years old and privately owned. Showers at $2 for 5 mins are not expensive, it states on all information we are pack in and pack out as we are 60+ ks from the nearest rubbish disposal place. The kitchen used to be stocked but people continually took things they thought were better in their vans than in the camp. But there is a big sign in the office where it advises we rent out a large black box with everything you need for the number of people in your group, the cost refunded on return of all goods in clean condition. There are only the Peacocks on the grounds once again because I don't know when you were there I can't comment but in 8 years yours is the first such statement about the smell of the ground.

A really good place with nice owners.
Fees were $36 a night for campervan + $5 for power.
Facilities of the main block are nice, clean; Drop toilets but not a problem, owners explain there too far away from the closest sewage station.
$2 for 4min showers which is long enough even for girls to shampoo.
Last but not least, just next to the Wharariki Beach track (300 meters) and then 20mins to the beach.
++ : far away from light pollution, did capture astonishing milky way picture with a perfectly clear sky.
- : can be very windy

Not usually a camper so was dubious about staying here - but was proven wrong.
Great cabins with comfortable bed and table and chairs. Kitchen worked well for us and the showers were lovely and hot and had ample time on them to allow you to wash and condition hair all for just $2. Long drop toilets which are not my favourite were great here - no smell and plenty of toilet paper and hand washing facilities. All in all would definitely go again.
Had visits from two horses, one hen, one pea hen and a bell bird which made sitting on the deck exciting. Great local tracks to both the beach and up to the lighthouse. Views and photographic opportunities are great and well worth the walks.

The plus the of this campsite is the lovely environment and the access to one of the most beautiful beaches in NZ - but make no mistake, it is a 20 minute walk to this beach and nowhere close.
It is absolutely overpriced, we paid 44 NZD for 2 people / powered site and you have to pay 2 NZD for a 4 min shower (with little water) extra. This makes it one of the most expensive sites we stayed on and the value for money is not adequate. There are long drop toilets only, there is not even a garbage bin on the site. The bays for the campervans are very small. Kitchen is OK but only half of the equipment was working. One of the positive things is a BBQ-place. The staff at the reception were not unfriendly but it was no warm welcome either. We got the feeling the interest lies more in the money than on the customer satisfaction. Next time I will choose a different site.

Thank you for your review. Your charge for 2 people on a powered site should have been $41. If your site was "too small" a walk back to the office to check if a bigger site was available would be in order. Guarantee of a site to fit is by pre-paid booking, which is policy for powered site. The female showers although it says 4 mins are actually 6 mins and the men are 5 mins, they do not have "pressure" like household showers as they are from water tanks. We do not anywhere advertise we are beach side all our advertising states it is a 20 min walk to the beach. The park runs on DOC policy of pack in and pack out for rubbish to keep costs down.

For $41 (2 adults and power) you had no warm showers for free, no single rubbish bin etc. the facilities were clean for a long drop toilet.

Thank you for your comments. The park runs on tank water and if it gave "free" showers no one would get one as some people just stay in there. The shower time is longer than what is stated on the shower it is 6 mins for females and 5 mins for males.

Thank you for your response. As already stated ALL our advertising states we are "the closest camp" to the beach and a 20 min walk is required. The camp and its facilities are only 5 years old it is the sea air which causes things to not "look" pristine like a camp in a city. I can assure you the camp is we maintained and over winter is "freshened" up for summer.

This is a magic spot.
If you don't want to be in a big commercial camp ground and don't need all the facilities, then you will love it here. It is a small character filled camp ground surrounded by farm land, as close as you can get to Wharariki Beach which is stunning and only a short walk. We were reasonably self contained so only used the kitchen to wash our dishes but it has modern shared spaces. Being a remote rural location they have limited water and no rubbish collection. Paying for a shower makes you consider if you really need one and limits water wastage, toilets were self composting but clean and fresh and packing rubbish out isn't an issue with a recycle centre in Collingwood. Small inconvenience for being able to stay in such a great spot.
