Information

Waipiata Domain and Camping Area

Waipiata is situated on the Otago Central Rail Trail, 6km from Ranfurly and 30km from Hyde. This corner of the Maniototo Plains was once a thriving railway camp servicing the Central Otago Central Railway line.

On the north side of the rail yard is Waipiata Domain. The large sheltered area provides camping facilities, tennis courts and backs onto the popular bowling green. It is also the site of the annual Waipiata Country Ute Muster.

Enjoy the chance to experience the history in this area and meet the locals in this great little town; the perfect place for swimming, fishing and kayaking on the meandering Taieri River.

Toilet is not serviced - you use it you clean it! Opens from Labour weekend to Queens Birthday weekend – weather/frost dependant. Toilet may be closed during this time if effluent tank is full.

Honesty box for donations – donations go toward cost of emptying effluent tank, transporting and disposal of the effluent.

This site is for certified self contained vehicles only. Water supply is untreated and therefore cannot be considered as potable.

Nice large flat area with clean well stocked toilet.

Had the worst night though as a group of presumably locals had loud music going till 3am and clearly drunk. If it wasn’t for our two ypung kids that did manage to fall asleep somehow, we would have left. A pity that some people just spoil it all for others.

    Absolutely loved this spot!

A large flat space in a stunning peaceful location with a clean flush toilet. A perfect stop off while my partner was doing the Otago rail trail. We didn’t go to the pub but great there is one in walking distance. A freedom spot but please donate if you can☺️

Heaps of room in the Domain for very large vehicles and caravans.

Not much shelter or shade. Clean toilets. Easy walk to the Pub. Great place for a stop over and a great place to park up for a Rail Trail experience. 👍👍

    Very nice place.

    Quite and clean.

If you do the Otago Central Rail Road you can overnight there with the camper or

you have nearby a hotel and bar. Very friendly owner.

One the edge of this little village is the free domain, well sign posted, easy to find.

New toilet installed next to the tennis courts. ( no lights) large oval with some pines as a wind break. Private house near by. Pleasant location. Rural outlook. A pub with counter meals is a easy walk, but not next to the campground! Two other self contained motor homes when we were there.
