Information

Katiki Beach North Reserve Rest Stop

The small reserve at the north end of Katiki beach is available for overnight parking for self-contained vans. There is room for large vans, but only a few of them. There is also a nice grass area for picnics.

  • Absolutely amazing place to freedom camp!

Just enough campers (about 5) to share the good spots by the beach when we arrived at about half past 6PM on a Saturday early in October. Fellow campers were super friendly and up for a good yarn. Sandflies were also super friendly, so make sure you bring enough anti-pest cosmetics and/or devices.

Our current spot (per photo) is perfect for viewing the entire panorama of the seashore BUT if the wind direction is just right, the smell of the toilets gets blown our way. Nevertheless, the toilets were relatively clean for a drop type and there were a few rubbish bins of needed, though it would be kind if you bring your rubbish with you when you leave.

Lastly, sunrise is along the shoreline of the beach, perfect to wake up to. Sunset is behind the trees setting up an amazing backdrop along the horizon, and come night time you can barely hear cars as it's mostly just the sound of the wind and the waves lulling you to sleep.

Will definitely go back here given the chance (and after we tick off the other camp sites in our checklist).

  • Great little free camp to stop.

It would fit 15 campers in here .. easy. Two toilets, no showers. No dump point.

    Mostly level ground.

Yes it is near the main road but the sound of the surf is louder.

We would certainly stop here again.

  • Located just between Hampden and Palmerston, plenty of space for all types of campers, right on the road but don't really notice the noise also right on the beach which offers a stunning morning view

! Clean toilets and plenty of bins. Couple resident kittens living in the bush which greatly accept some treats.

  • Let’s be frank, it’s free, a very beautiful beach, good parking, picnic tables, average toilets but rubbish spread everywhere(mostly toilet paper), high road noise and a train about 9pm.

The council could do more to make this an excellent place to stop.

  • Great site amongst the trees right next to the beach.

Amazing view. Road behind but you barley notice it when your parked up. Decent dump toilets that are cleaned daily too. Would definitely stop off here again.

  • Beach side spot under trees.

As others say, it's on the side of the main road, so you will hear passing traffic including trucks but it's just their notice as they pass, not horns or anything. As night goes on it lessens and the beach view and sound. If you need quiet, get a DOC pass or pack earplugs.

There are two pit toilets. Park smart, be aware of soft sand and loose overhead branches. It does get cool. Overall, I'd park here again.

  • The view was stunning.

Right at the ocean, beautiful beach. Especially with a larger motorhome it was hard because of a very windy night. Toilets weren't clean.

  • Great spot to camp!

There are around 10 places for campervans. Most of them have beach view. There are only toilets, they are cleaned daily.

  • Perfect spot right next to the sea.

Public bathroom (pit toilets) get cleaned daily. Not many spots available, so make sure to get there early

  • Nice beach, very windy, noisy traffic from nearby road and trains.

  • It is just off the main highway before you cross the railway line before the Moeraki turning coming from the South.

By the beach and under the trees, a brilliant spot, but we had taken ages going to the lighthouse and around Moeraki trying to find it! Eventually some kind locals directed us to the right place.

  • A very nice place.

We stayed two nights because there is plenty to discover in the region. Smaller campervans (Toyota Hiace) fit under the trees with a direct view onto the the beach. The bigger ones can park at the designated parking area. There are absolutely no facilities except for two rubbish bins. Those were used by campers to dispose their rubbish and were overflowing. Guys and girls, please don't just throw everything on one spot because there is rubbish written on it. There are enough places to dispose with more capacity.

The beach is great and our 2.5 year old had a lot of fun playing in the sand.

  • A really beautiful place.

We saw some penguins and a lot of seals. While low tide you can reach a little island, we were there at high tide and it was still really nice.

  • There is a great little walk and you can view Yellow Eyed Penguins!!

During summer the parents return from the sea at dusk to feed their babies. Plenty of seals also, and if you are lucky, some Blue Penguins!

  • Site close to main road just off main road as you go into the bend.

You can just park and walk to beach easily. Need to be self contained no toilets just car park really little or no views to beach. Good place to park if you need a rest from driving and walk along the beach. Not many spaces here about 10 spots at a push.

  • Lovely spot!

As noted, it is close to the road and railway line, but if you position your van so that you're sleeping closest to the surf, the white noise drowns out most other sounds. Beware of some soft sandy areas, especially if dark. Best to walk around and check, rather than get stuck.

  • Beautiful views and wide shady parking on either grass or hard sand with direct access to the sandy beach.

Couldn't hear traffic over the white noise of the waves (even though road only 20m away). Only loses points as no water or dump facilities, and bins strongly state "no domestic waste" (even though filled to overflowing with it the time!)
