Hi, thought i would up-date the Hihi track we did last week.

This is an excellent tramp, although should be tackled with abit of experience under your belt. Started at the DOC visitor center 10am. It took 8hrs to get to Hihi summit via Motutapere, there is plenty of rugged terrain to get you teeth into, and some very thick bush in places, gaiters are a must. The track markings are adequate, although could do with abit of a maintanance in places, as had to search for them at times, the track is generally obvious, Great views of east coast from both summits, spent a windy night on Hihi, soft mossy surface to lay down on. Bogs/mud for a couple of kms on way out next day, about 4 hours back down to upper K valley rd via the Billy goat flats area, and an option of tracks to walk out on. One of the most rugged tramps ive done, had about 12kgs on my back, you will work hard on this track, but as always it is worth your efforts if you like abit of hard yakka, go on, get out there!!
