Amazing walk from Kimaniawa road, steep at first but great hunting and epic view from the open tops with a short hike back as most of the way back is down hill, great hut well kept with plenty of bunks

and a good hot fire with a lot of coal and firewood supplied, I made it back from Waipakihi hut in under four hours and it was not hard just the way their is a steep climb but worth it. Great view from the hut but cold and often a lot of snow in winter, spring..

    WOAH NELLY!!!

This track is soooo cool man, its a steep as climb for maybe an hour, man you get mega thighs, then as you break thru the bushline, you come accross a mean as view of the tongarioro and ruapehu and pihanga mountains, plus lake taupo, and even tauhara!! this spot is amazing! the views are to die for, i would reccomend taken a few deck chairs and celebrate your birthday with beautiful sights, this track is hard yakka and i only would suggest for the hardest of hikers, end of the track ends at the waipakihi hut at the confluence of the waipakihi river and some other river, some lady at the hut said the water was drinkable, the track from the umukarikari ridge down to the hutt is a bit hard yakka too, but easy peasy if you are up for a challenge, return took me 8 hours, i had a day pack alot of fruit and lollies and was in my track runners.... piece of piss i say
