Can't go wrong for a free spot tbh.

Lovely view, plenty of space, signal. Toilets currently closed but have portaloos in place that get cleaned every other morning (got cleaned whilst we were there) just take some paper with you. Felt safe, noise wasn't bad at all. Train passes occasionally and was no nuisance drivers after about 8/9pm.

Was nothing wrong with the location.

The locals were not very welcoming to us. We had a guy doing laps of the designated zone for hours after 9pm. Some sketchy types showing up and delivering things to camper vans. Would be amazing if these sorts of things weren’t happening. Scenically it’s very beautiful. Porter potties on site could use a very deep clean.

Absolutely idyllic location with park, toilets, river on 2 sides.

Only a few official spots for free camping self contained and it was full so we camped outside designated area as did a lot of other people and no authorities arrived. When we first parked we realised the campervan next door was dealing drugs with 2 big dogs for protection. We moved once we realised. There were a few cars coming in and out and I didn't feel safe/comfortable all night but the spot is certainly beautiful.

A very nice spot right next to the lake.

There's one flushable toilet which is open all night. You have also picnic tables and 6- 7 spots to park. Probably not really suitable for a large motorhome but definitely for campervans. Sometimes you can hear the train which isn't too bad. I'm a light sleeper and didn't wake up from it. Recommended!

The place is beautiful, next to the river.

It has some public toilets too. The only negative bit would be the train noise during the night but otherwise it was great.

Great place great views downside is the cleaner doesn’t always leave the toilets open at night it says 2 night stay but you can stay for as long as you like as long as you keep clean and don’t set up temporary

structures that make it look like a permanent dwelling area many homeless cars park here every night and you can choose where you want to park whether it be in the designated area , the car park on the left or right side or even in the trees when it’s too hot locals are friendly and very nice to chat with and don’t mind the longer stays

Area was flat & well marked, only 1 other camper stayed along with us.

Walking distance to food and nice park plaques with historical info. Trains were frequent but it was more the bells that annoyed me more. That said it didn’t bother me during the night. One toilet was locked but another was unlocked after 8pm. Great view of the river! Would stay here again, even with long term campers around veranda. We also had our dog and it was fine, lots of other dogs around.

    Nice spot overlooking the river.

Currently has two portaloos open 24/7 as toilet block closed. Interesting history described in park. A few trains not a bother to us.7

Only problem is the freight train noise. Heavy sleepers no issue but it woke me at 2am and 4am.

Pulled in around 9.30pm to the last freight train going by.

Toilet is locked at night but this spot is listed as self contained only anyway, which we are. The rest of the night was very quiet and peaceful by the river. Good clean spot to stop when heading south from Auckland later in the day/night... we’d just arrived and picked up the campervan. Would stay again if heading along highway 1.

    Odd place, this one.

Arrived at 8:30pm, toilets already closed. Limited places available, majority taken up by one huge motor home. Near a train track, but stopped a little after 10pm. When the toilets are open, very friendly voice, and music playing. 10 min limit though. Good stop off if you’re passing through and need a place to stay.

    Great little free location.

Particularly enjoyed the talking toilet and playground. Superb views along the river. Few facilities but good for a free site. Last train was much later than the 9.30pm.

Good location right by the river.

But the negative point is that it is close to railways and trains pass every hour.

Hopefully last train at 9:30 pm.

Not so many choices for free camping in this zone.

We stayed here after being stuck til late at the late night clinic in Hamilton.

Was a decent spot to stay, there are public toilets but they are locked at night so only self contained campervans can stay here. Lovely reserve, right by the river... Big downside was train line right nearby.. Extremely loud as freight trains passed through latest night and early hours of the morning. Wouldn't stay here again, but was a good place as an emergency/last minute stopover if you haven't booked anything and are in the area.
