Information

Pelorus River Access / Totara Walk

Time: 5 min

The River Access track branches off the Totara track and leads through mature NZ beech forest to the Pelorus river. A gorgeous swimming hole and picnic spot, there are big rocks to jump off into the river and a view up to the historic Pelorus Bridge.

A swim in the Pelorus feeds the soul - brave the temperature and get in the drink!

    06Oct18.

Nice walk. Ok toilets but better ones the other side of the road by the cafe.

Bridge may be historic but not so pretty. The river is good. A guy had a dip when we were there. He gasped somewhat so I think it was cold!

Loved the Pelorus River as it is one of the spots of the Hobbit.

Could really imagine how the dwarfs drifted down the river. Lovely green colour of the water as well! Some sandflies!

A lovely river where footage of the second instalment of the Hobbit triology was taken.

If you liked the movie, you definitely have to go there.

    Beautiful river!

The walk in was very easy. The river was quite brisk, middle of October might be too cold to swim for most, but we still got in there. Wonderful stop!

Stunning river with awesome rock formation.

Even in winter time it is possible to swim... Really cold but still worth it.

It's very hard to fault this place.

Our family stops here whenever we head south (and back north) for summer. The river swimming is as good as it gets and you see trout more often than not. It's not by chance that The Hobbit will be filming here. Pristine.

Did 2 short walks here and it was just the prettiest part of New Zealand in my opinion.

(Helen) safe swimming spot - although we didn't try. Water so clear could watch little shag diving clearly.
