Sawcut Gorge is spectacular! the chasm is 150m deep and at times only 2m wide.
Any trip in this area is a serious undertaking due to the hazards of rising rivers and falling rocks. There are no tracks as such and the riverbed is rocky. This is a fantastic hop rocking adventure. Anyone venturing off the marked route should carry a decent map, let others know thier intentions and be well aware of the weather conditions.

Nice adventure.
You must wet your feet. Crossing the river all the time. 3-4 hours return. Swimming in the river - beautiful!

What a good adventure it was!
There is no sign on the main street, one hour drive from Kaikoura. Your feet must get wet, better wear sandals. It is really good to go there in summer. You will indulge that.

Attempted walk up the gorge, restricted by a swollen river (rainfall) could not go to the end safely - no description of river crossings/warnings in books/tourist information.

My favourite walk because it is a bit of an adventure, wading up the river, scrambling over rocks.
You will get wet, be careful, wear good walking shoes as it is slippery. You park at someones house so please respect their wishes and privacy.

I went up with my friends and my mum and it was just amazing.
We got scorched by a 36 degree heat but it was heaven doing the creek crossings. Be prepeared to get your feet wet. Gorge is amazing. Worth your while. We swam in the river the whole way down. Love to come back

Be prepared to get your feet very wet and beware of the sandflies. Great unusual scenery and few people.
