Information

Mounds Walk

1 km return | 20 minutes return

A quick jaunt to some bizarre formations. Even the geologists are stymied by how they formed.

Walking Track

Access

Mounds Walk is signposted 5 km south of Whakapapa Village. A small roadside parking bay indicates the start of the walk.

Track

A gentle track through the shrubs, eventually climbs one of the mounds. Interpretation panels help explain the formation.

Geology

Around 10,000 years ago a major structural collapse sent debris avalanche through the Whakapapa catchment and the resulting deposit has hummocky mounds on its top surface. These can now be discovered on this Mounds Walk.

An interpretation walk gives some clues.
