  • Queen Charlotte Track – ungulate control operation

From 16 to 27 September 2024 an ungulate control operation is occurring on public and private land in the Queen Charlotte Track areas. This is from Lochmara Bay to the ridge south of Onahau Bay in the Queen Charlotte Sound and between Te Mahia and Broughton Bay in the Kenepuru Sound (see attached map JPG, 238K).

The operation is primarily targeting deer and goats and will be achieved using both thermal imaging technology to aerial shoot from and helicopter and ground hunting teams with indicator dogs.

Be aware, if you are in this area during these dates:

    • There could be noise from a helicopter and rifle shots
    • Signs will be in place at key points of entry to the area, advising on the operation
    • Safety protocols exist for target identification so there is no chance of visitors being in the area whilst the operation is undertaken
    • Off track travel in the operation area is not recommended.
