Information

Omahuru Campsite

Camp, swim, fish, or relax beside the river in the Waimana valley. Take your binoculars for birdwatching.

Omahuru (Ogilvies) Camping Ground lies down a remote valley that follows the Waimana River on it's descent out of Te Urewera. It's a decent drive (including around 15 mins on gravel road) and the campsite has an isolated feel. If you are looking for a wilderness experience, then it's well worth a look.

It's a solid gravel road drive in if you're behind the wheel of a large campervan (like I was), but it doesn't stop me giving this place a solid 9 ranking.

It feels isolated and we had it to ourselves. I get the feeling that this might be norm (except public holidays maybe). It's a massive grassy area with a number of picnic tables and the river is a real gem to swim in. There's a few nearby walks if you have time too. This forest is home to the rare Kokako. Take a listen.

A bit in the middle of nowhere...

Beautiful, breath-taking area close to a river and many walks. Plenty of picnic tables, good clean toilets and well-maintained fire pits. Doesn't seem like many people use this spot, so the privacy was nice.

The site is down a long, windy, gravel road which was quite tricky in spots. Very isolated (no phone service in case you run into trouble i.e. get a flat tire). No signs until you're at the campground.

Overall, a nice spot but tricky to get to.
