Lake Monowai - pure serenity

Information

Lake Monowai Carpark to Green Lake

Time: 6 hr 12.5km (one way)

The Green Lake/Lake Monowai track is a five day circuit. It can be shortened with vehicle access along the
Borland Road or boat access to Monowai Hut

One hour along the Rodger Inlet Track a signpost indicates the Green Lake Track junction. The track to Green Lake climbs steadily to a saddle near Mount Cuthbert and then sidles down to the lake, following the lakeshore to the Green Lake Hut (4 bunks). At the junction you could take the more challenging route to Rodger Inlet huts.
To walk out to Borland Road follow the track that climbs steadily then descends through beech forest to a clearing near Island Lake where the Clarke Hut - Borland Road Track junction is found.
Tussock clearings and beech covered saddles are traversed to the Borland Road. The track is marked by
poles through tall tussock clearings. This will add on another 2.5hrs (5.5km) onto your trip.

    This track is just beautiful!

I walked from Lake Monowai to the Green Lake Hut, it was the first track I did and it took me 8 hours. It is not an easy track, better with good tramping boots!

Badly signed, too much mud, no bridges, poorly maintained track.

The only non-commercial track in pure nature.

    There should be more!
