Information

Kauri Loop Track

3 km return | 2 hours return (generous)

These are some of the most southerly kauri you will find - and fine examples too. Loggers left a lone tree- maybe they were aware of the destruction their work entailed and wanted to make a token effort to preserve seed stock for the future spread and recolonisation.

Walking Track

Access

From Huntly, cross the river on the Tainui Bridge, turn left and follow Hakarimata Road to Parker road. The last few hundred metres to the parking area are gravel. There’s a toilet just inside the forest.

Track

The metalled track has over 1500 steps on the loop and is well-maintained and signposted.

Shortly after the start of the climb, head right to the lone standing kauri. A little further on is a grove of kauri preceded by a grove of nikau.

The climb after the kauri arrives at another junction, from which you will descend after the short detour to the Upper Lookout. There are views over the river, as it fans out to Huntly.

Polynesian History

The name Hakarimata was conferred when a huge feast was prepared for guests ‘hakari kai mata’.

The tomokanga was unveiled in 2016 as a joint venture between DoC, Waikato District Council, Ngaruawahia Community Board and Waikato Tainui. It was carved by Master Carver Inia Te Wiata and depicts important tribal stories and histories.
