Information

Mount Auckland Atuanui Walkway

7 km return | 3 hours return

The best views of Kaipara Harbour are reserved for gaps in the vegetation before the summit. On a clear day there are extensive views from the elevated platform on the summit, which overtops the vegetation. You can see Bream Head, Hen and Chickens Islands, Little Barrier and Great Barrier Islands, the Moehau Range of the Coromandel and everything in between.

Walking Track

Access

Mount Auckland Walkway is signposted along Kaipara Hills Road 26km south of Wellsford along S.H.16. Follow the unsealed road 3km to a large parking bay on the right, from where the start of the walk is signposted.

Track

The track traverses farmland for 25 minutes. Bear left at the top of the farm track and follow the ridge over a low saddle before entering native forest in the Atuanui Conservation Area.

The track is then marked with orange triangles and is well-formed with occasional muddy spots. The 1 hour to the summit passes two signposted detours (both less than 5 minutes return) to kauri trees. The climb is gentle but steady and reaches a lookout platform by a trig on the 305-metre summit.

Polynesian History

The defensive ditch and middens near the summit indicate the presence of a previous Maori pa site.

The parking area is very small and unsafe to turn around in.

Nothing larger than a van should attempt. The walk is very open and beautiful. Should only be started with three hours of daylight left.
