Not ideal for tent campers.
There is one grassy area that looks good for tents but the ground is so rocky it’s impossible to get pegs in - one of us ended up using rocks instead of pegs (which was a bit dodgy on a windy night) and the other gave up and slept in the car haha. It’s a pretty location close to the lake but left a bit to be desired.

Stayed here for 1 night on our way to Milford Sound.
Large site with many spots. Left hand side appears to be a bit more in the woods and moist. Right hand side have more open patches. Recommend.

I have seen better DOC Camp...
Classic one with no staff, just a box where to put the money if required. Long drop toilet pretty stinky with no water and soap. Not even cold showers.
Do go if it rains, the place turns into a swamp.
Would rather to drive a bit more to reach Milford campgrounds

We stopped for one night on the way back from Milford sound.
Plenty of space, pouring with rain when we were there but found a sheltered spot. Would stay again.

Stayed there for one night only.
Arrived about 4.30pm and luckily found a site by the water. It was a fabulous evening and we ate our meal on the beach. Sandflies didn't seem to be a problem

Lovely.
Would recommend driving down to the bottom of the campsite with views of the lake. Lots of sandflies.

We arrived in the dark having driven all day.
Can't say what it was like really. You drive down from the main road. We found the first flat area and parked up for the night. We are fully self contained so it was perfect for us. A couple of other vans arrived in the night and then we left early to get to Milford Sound.

Loved this camp site.
The lake was a minute's walk from our tent and the views of the mountains and the lake are breathtaking. Loved it so much that we spent an extra day here. Lots of long drop toilets, which weren't too clean and the place is so rocky that you'll bend a few of your tent pegs like we did. Checked with few others who pitched tents and they too had the same problem. But the views make up for everything.

Quiet and serene. We got in first and possibly had the best spot with a view of the lake.

Pretty expensive.

2 dumping toilets (stinky when I was there), no water. Can't wash your hands. The lake is beautiful and it's nice.
This side should be free.

This site we drove to after a 6 hour day on the road desperate for a shower.
We tried calling the place but no one answered so we drove there after seeing that it wasn’t by booking but first there first served. The site is a free site, no powered sites, no showers and no reception or anything just a little stop near a track.

Really lovely spot, lots of space, it’s on a lake but the sandflies aren’t too bad.
It is a drop toilet, quite a few flies but it’s not the worst

Nice campsite, close to lake, in forest.
$30 ($15 per adult) a little pricy for just drop toilets and campsite but its the cheapest one close to Te Anau (20min drive).
Unpowered and powered campsites in Te Anau are around $50 (for two people) however they are very domestic and dont have the “camp in the wild feeling” that this one has.
We stayed here and drove to Milford Sound the next day. If are doing the same as us and you have the time, drive to the campsites further up. Looks like it would be more beautiful staying up there.

Close enough to Te Anau (around 25 km) and very quiet and peaceful. You can camp by the lake and the sunset is magical.

Fab spot 20 mins from te anau, phone reception if you stand on the top of a picnic table at the top of the park.
Beautiful place to park and walk. Take your air freshener to the drop loos

The best thing is the view.
The toilets are disgusting so we didn't use them. We found it quite expensive (13$ pp) just to park a self contained vehicle for a single night. But freedom camping self contained in this area isn't allowed, so we didn't have any other choice. Just to expensive. We have enjoyed much better facilities for free other places.

Great DOC site just a short drive out of Te Anau, location is right by the side of the lake which even in March sumons you to go for a dip although I must admit it was not for long, views of lake & mountains
surrounding the lake are awesome, you have either open parking in a large car park or you can park amongst the trees in the wooded section as we did which was very nice & secluded & close to the lake, toilets are plentiful however not the best & the two local to us were full of dead flys literally hundreds, but they were serviced & besides the flys clean, I would recommend this as a great site to stay one or two nights it cost 26.00 dollars but I think it was worth it, few sand flys so ointment up with repellant

Great little areas to park on the left - shades and close to a GORGEOUS lake.
Non self contained vehicles are welcome. Very private and really beautiful. The mosquitoes and sandflies in the toilets made them practically unusable (hard to pee when mosquitoes are flying up out of the toilet). But we’d stay here again. The bigger toilet near the entrance wasn’t as bad and I’m sure when they clean them there are less bugs. Overall a nice stop for anyone on their way to/from Milford Sound.

Nice location close to Te Anau and included in the DOC Campsite Pass.
Sites in the forest close to the lake (on the left side) are nice but only few so you need to arrive quite early.
Toilets were clean.

A good stopover for the night as it’s close to the town, on the way to Milford, and included in the DOC conservation camping pass.

Beautiful spot near lake and river mouth with private secluded little areas per camper.
Beware if you turn left to head down that direction as there isn't a lot of room to turn around if the camper spaces have already been taken. Well sheltered with trees. Quiet and peaceful I would totally recommend
