Information

Skippers Campsite

This is a standard campsite in the Queenstown/Wakatipu area. Camp within scenic rocky natural features on terraces around an old cemetery and school. Bike, walk, tramp or hunt to explore the area.

The Skippers township Camping Ground is a magical area. The drive out here is a bit of a trip, it is steep, narrow, windy, huge drops-offs and generally a no-go zone for rental cars. This is a very historical area, with heaps of great stories about the gold diggers. The campsite at the end of the road is amongst the ruins of the town that used to exist here, there are rocky terraces around an old cemetery and school, please enjoy what is left there, it is illegal to remove any artefacts.

This is an awesome place for mountain biking and walking to explore the area.

    Amazing spot.

One of the best we camped in the South Island.

You'll want a 4x4, plenty of time and an adventurous spirit.

Well worth the trip though and some cool history once you reach the destination with the old school there.

Fantastic spot with flush toilets and great views on the trip in.

Narrow access road and can be a little rough in areas but a vehicle with good ground clearance will make it no problem

    Excellent location, beautiful place.

However the road is very windy and best for 4WD, not regular cars. No rental vehicles allowed on this road.
