This is a basic campsite in the Queenstown/Wakatipu area, 15 km from Arrowtown, at the end of a 4WD road that crosses the Arrow River numerous times.
It is an adventure to get out to the Macetown Camping Ground. You can 4WD, walk or mountain bike here - there are 23 river crossings through very cold water so be prepared! It is important to know what the weather is doing before you embark on your mission, in the winter it's not such a good idea as the river can be impassible.
The campsite itself is fantastic, there are interpretation panels that tell stories of what happened during the gold rush as it is one of Otago's most intact historic goldfield towns.
This historic site is protected by law - the removal of any material is illegal.
Macetown Campsite is categorised as a DOC Basic Campsite. The following pricing indicates usual pricing.
Basic campsites have very limited facilities so you need to be fully self-sufficient. There are basic toilets and water may be from a water tank that is untreated, stream or lake. Untreated water should be boiled before use to ensure it's safe. Access may be by road or boat.
