The road out to Macetown

Information

Macetown Campsite

This is a basic campsite in the Queenstown/Wakatipu area, 15 km from Arrowtown, at the end of a 4WD road that crosses the Arrow River numerous times.

It is an adventure to get out to the Macetown Camping Ground. You can 4WD, walk or mountain bike here - there are 23 river crossings through very cold water so be prepared! It is important to know what the weather is doing before you embark on your mission, in the winter it's not such a good idea as the river can be impassible.

The campsite itself is fantastic, there are interpretation panels that tell stories of what happened during the gold rush as it is one of Otago's most intact historic goldfield towns.

This historic site is protected by law - the removal of any material is illegal.

Tried to get there in an xtrail.

Got about 1.5k and couldn't get up a big uneven ramp directly after a river crossing.

I should add I'm not an experienced 4x4 driver and it may well be fine for those who are.

Macetown is a beautiful spot but only accessable by 4WD in the right weather.

Long drop toilets only. We only did a day trip as could not take our motorhome in.
