Information

Butchers Flat Campsite

This grassy, flat camping area was once a gold mining area and is great for picnicking or swimming. You'll also find walking and mountain biking opportunities nearby.

A camping site within old gold mining history, at the end of a long winding gravel road. There are plenty of places to camp out on the grass, as well as a few great spots underneath the beech trees. There is a beautiful river down below to swim in but be careful as there are cliffs everywhere. There are warning signs, watch your step.

DOC Campsite Pricing

Butchers Flat Campsite is categorised as a DOC Standard Campsite. The following pricing indicates usual pricing. Prices vary for some campsites and may include seasonal pricing. Visit the DOC website for exact pricing.

These campsites have toilets, a water supply that could be treated or untreated tap water, or from a stream or lake, and vehicle or boat access. Bring your own soap for washing hands. Untreated water should be boiled before use to ensure it's safe. Wood BBQs and fireplaces, cold showers, picnic tables, a cooking shelter and rubbish bins may be provided; this will vary from site to site.

    Very nice, secluded campsite.

    Steep cliffs are no joke.

Do note there are two small fords to get to the campsite, and the road is slightly rough at places for the last 2-3km. Do not go with a large motorhome. A normal van with not terribly high ground clearance and without 4x4 was totally fine.

Great place Right beside the river Stayed there a night And went to check out the river in the morning Wasps and bee around but they didn't bother us Rain water collected in the tank (boil before

    use)

Or use water from the river (fresh water)

    $8 for adult

    $ 4 for children

Under 4 are free i think.

Very nice campground with a lot of space.

Lots of wasps and sandflies but all very low above the ground. Two toilets and water not suitable for drinking so be prepared. River with crystal clear water so kids can swim. No dump station.

Old goldmining area, access to water for searching for some gold, but bad roads to get there, not really for normal cars or campers.

It's a long drive off the main road but if you seek seclusion then it's worth it.

Pelorus Camping area is lovely, but busy in the high season. So Butchers Flat is a worthy change up. Lots of space and a lovely river runs alongside.

    Well maintained, awesome swimming spot.

River is a bit tricky to get to, down some steep stairs, but worth it.

Had the place to ourselves for a few hours and a couple families showed up in the evening. Pretty quiet.

Long drop, picnic tables and water tank provided - water tank has warnings saying water may not be drinkable . Feels a bit expensive at $10pp compared to what you can get elsewhere
