Motutere Bay, lakeshore, Taupo
Motutere Bay Top 10 Holiday Park is the only park situated on the shores of the Lake Taupo on State Highway 1.
Whether traveling from the north or south the beauty of our little piece of paradise is that it's so easy to find!
Our facilities cover the full length of the beach and spread either side of SH1 on 10 hectares of park like reserve. The gradual slope of the property means that most sites have stunning views over the lake.
From Taupo, drive 32 kilomteres down State Highway 1. Most of this route follows around the east side of Lake Taupo and is extremely scenic.
Heading north from Wellington, follow State Highway 1. Once through Turangi (located at the base of Lake Taupo), continue to head north. We are located about 15 minutes drive from Turangi –
19 kilometres on the eastern Shores of the Lake.
The park offers powered and unpowered lakefront sites as well as cabins and self-contained units for those seeking more creature comforts. We offer a range of facilities including 3 x camp kitchens, 4 x amenities blocks, coin-operated laundry, boat ramp, onsite store and function room perfect for group get-togethers!

Booked a lakeside plot for an afternoon/night stay hoping to get some views on the drive down to Wellington.
Got powered site 4 which was next to a shipping container up against the motorway crash barrier and too far from the power source (one pylon between 4 sites) and right at the end of the park. Seemed to be the only bit of the lake portion of the camp where the sites go 4 deep. Overall the lake area of the camp was not that pleasant IMO. I knew about the noise but the sheer proximity of site 4 was a bit worrying definitely the closest one I saw. The lady at the desk (which you cross SH1 to visit!) was lovely tried to find a longer cable but due to overhanging trees restricting the site wouldn’t even reach and she kindly moved us to a hill site on the other side of the road that was very nice but a bit tricky to get a 7.7m 6 berth into as the road is quite narrow. The noise on the hillside sites was fine although in the guest section we were in a lot of people used as a thoroughfare. Facilities very nice great selection of DVD to borrow. Only issue was ratio of washers to dryers at our laundry so a big line of wet clothes bags with 4 bucks on them. Again can’t fault the staff they were lovely but if you get site 4 just politely ask to move it looked like a last minute add on to the plan anyway and they didn’t look surprised when I asked!

Perfectly clean and tidy camp.
Note that if you have a dog you will not be on the upper sites, but still a peek of the lake.
The trucks were present, but not too bad. Would be worse on the laleside units.

Lovely site, stayed right on the lake front in a powered site.
Showers were fabulous and toilets very clean. Kitchen was well set up with complimentary washing up liquid, dish brush and tea towels. Watch out for the swan poo! There are lots of ducks about too. Great place for skimming stones.
Unfortunately State Highway 1 is right there too and lots of trucks rumble through the night; not great if you are a light sleeper.

The only good thing about this site is the view across the lake.
We paid for 2 nights but stayed only one because of the incessant traffic noise on SH1. Hardly slept at all. Perhaps pitches up the hillside would be quieter.

Hello Ron and thank you for your review. Due to road closures after the cyclone, the highway has been busier than ever past the park. I'm sorry this has had a negative effect on your stay and this will die down once the traffic decreases to normal. We do still have traffic under normal circumstances however not like it has been. Appreciate you taking the time to review and wishing you safe and happy travels.

We stayed here with our two little dogs using a powered site.
It’s a little further down from Taupo city centre but location is great as well as the value. Big spacious grounds, we were in a dog friendly zone (a little off from the lakefront) and didn’t hear any noise that disrupted our sleep. Free, warm shower with the water pressure so good it feels like a massage! Kitchen was clean and well equipped. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.

Thank you for your candid review of our park and we're pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Whilst it is very unfortunate that the park is located where it is some positive action is being taken by New Zealand Traffic Authority. There is a review of speed limits happening around Lake Taupo and you are invited to provide feedback. The feedback received during this engagement phase will help inform the decisions the NZ Transport Agency make on the final proposed changes. They are proposing a reduction in speed limit from 100 to 60 and we support this as we believe this not only be safer but will reduce the noise impact on the park. We're sorry that you did not have a restful stay with us and as much as we would love to move this road we, unfortunately, can't. In my opinion this is not a place for tents.
The only good thing about this place it is the view; you can be near to the beautiful lake, landscape is amazing, but the kitchen is not well equipped, kitchen it is too small however, bathrooms are clean and water is warm. The WORST thing it’s the noise all night and all day. Camping site it is near to the way, and big trucks and cars are passing all night. I could not sleep because of the noise. This takes away a lot of value to the place which is quite expensive. I couldn’t rest that the worst.

Great motor-camp with good sized tent sites available on the edge of the lake.
The motor-camp is located tight beside state highway 1 so there is significant traffic noise particularly from trucks in the evening. However, this is made up for in the morning with the most spectacular lake views. Clean facilities. Free internet, free hot water showers. We arrived late do the office staff left an info pack in a safe outside the office clearly marked where our lot was located. They texted the safe password to us. Happily stay here again for a few nights.

Hello Sam, thank you for your feedback and unfortunately the road can be very noisy, however we are limited in being able to control this. We are trying to combat this issue by petitioning for the speed limit to be reduced through this area and it is still pending with local council. If you feel as strongly about this as we do, we'd be very grateful if you wrote your concerns to the NZ Transport Agency (https://www.nzta.govt.nz/contact-us) asking them to reduce the speed limit and therefore also the noise impact on the park. Super and helpful friendly people, unbeatably convenient stopover location, and you wake up to spectacular views.
Peaceful, family vibe, clean bathrooms and kitchens (random bonus - the bathroom played music from one stall so you have some tunes while you do your business : ). Both times we showed up super late and they managed to places us right on the water front, so we opened up the back of our van and woke up to lapping water. The only reason it’s not a full 10 is that since you’re right on the main road you hear cars through the night/day. We loved this spot!

Had a powered campervan site on the beach side.
Traffic is a complete disaster. It was a bit quieter for a while during the late evening, but then heavy traffic was rolling by all night, and the road is extremely close with nothing in between to protect from noise. Had a lousy sleep. Location just by the lake and reasonably clean toilets saves this review from the lowest grade.

Hi Staffan. Most of our guests comment that the highway noise at night is more than made up for by the amazing views, but we understand some people are affected more than others by it. For those guests who are lighter sleepers, or want a different outlook, we suggest our hillside powered sites. Some of these have expansive views over the lake, but they are quite a way back from the road for peace and quiet.

This was a great site, good clean facilities, lovely dip in the lake when we arrived and we were not troubled at all by the road.

A park by the motorway but also by the lakeside.
Amazing view at night. Arrived after hours but friendly manager came to assist. Small kitchen and no in-door seating area. Toilets by pincode. There is complimentary wifi. 50 cents for a short hot shower. $4 each for laundry and dryer. But clothes were still damp after drying. Paid $29 for 2 pax for a powered site. Reasonably priced and pleased with stay.

Thanks for the review. Just to update you we now have undercover seating and BBQs next to the kitchen and the showers are also free :) We also have a full indoor kitchen area and TV lounge on the other side of the park (across the road).

Spent a lovely couple of nights here in May, fabulous location, with Taupo only around 20 minutes away.
We had a lakeside-facing plot which was fantastic, with fabulous tranquil views across the lake. The amenities were fine without being spectacular, the showers in particular were not as good as other sites we had stayed at, but still plenty of hot water at 50c for 6 minutes. The main problem with the site is its proximity to the main road, with cars and lorries thundering past through the night. Was not a huge issue, but does unfortunately mean the peacefulness of the lakeside location is compromised. Staff were lovely and welcoming at check-in, and overall I would recommend coming here to stay for a night or two.

Thanks Tom for taking the time to review our Park. Our lakeside sites get some road noise but the views are amazing! We do offer Hillside sites as well which is set back from the road and reduced noise levels. We hope to see you back again :)

Yes, the highway is very close to the campground.
But that is the only negative aspect. The toilets are very clean, there are a huge kitchen and common room (you can rent DVD's for free and watch the movies there) and it has a new playground - that's worth a lot when travelling with kids.

Made the mistake of paying for two nights up front.
Couldn't sleep because of freeway traffic all night, and I am a fairly sound sleeper. Couldn't get a refund😖 left anyway.

Hi Alaina. I am not sure why you couldn't get a refund for your second night if you were unhappy. We would definitely offer this, particularly being outside of peak Christmas season. We have recently changed managers so unfortunately I can't chase this up with them but I encourage you to try us again.

Lakeside spot was absolutely stunning.
Staff had fantastic customer service. Experience was great from online booking through to check out after our stay. Facilities and grounds well kept. Great paddle boarding spot. Really enjoyed our time there and we are planning to go back soon.

Great view of Lake Taupo!
A bit expensive for the facilities you get, it's not outstanding. However, the location is stunning and the sound of the waves make the traffic noise disappear. Friendly staff but make sure your tent is equipped to strong winds! Altogether, a recommended spot to stay at!

Really beautiful place but only 9/10 because of the highway noise.
Powered sites right on the lake edge, reasonable prices, awesome staff and clean, well maintained facilities. Would definitely come here again and have another beautiful lake swim!!

Thanks for the amazing review Rhea. Our lakeside sites get some road noise but the views are amazing! For light sleepers we recommend one of our hillside sites which are back from the road but many of which still look down over the lake.
