  • Lovely campsite.

Exceptional facilities. Clean and tidy, It is a great location to explore other coastal areas with plenty of weekend markets and activities. We rated it 8 for two reasons. 1. We booked go four of us and it turned out our daughter who is a nurse had to work so could only one out of the four nights. 2. The air hockey in the rec room didn’t produce a puck so lost our money on that one. We would definitely go back again though as it was a great time.

Lots of permanent caravans here but heaps of wonderful clean facilities. Only got a 9 because it was the only camp we stayed in that had no free wifi.

  • Nice campground with big sites.

It was busy end of January and lots of children...but there is much to do for them. The location is perfect. Not far from Matakana, near the Sawmill Brewery, a short drive away. The shower was unisex and separated from the toilet which is very good. Water pressure and temperature perfect. Huge kitchen and barbecue available, but no pots or pans, so bring your own but you can rent if you need them.

  • Clean and tidy, the dining room was welcoming and warm, we appreciated it in winter time.

Camp was almost empty and very well located to reach Goat Island. Do not miss the Marine Discovery Center located in front of Goat Island, very interesting to discover the sea life and what researcher are doing there.

  • Very nice camping at a bay with play ground.

At low tide there is almost no sea water, but we loved that. It is nice walking and looking for little fish, crab, etc. At high tide we could go for a swim with no waves, very lovely for little children. Everything was very clean and maintained. Very good cooking area, but no pots, pans, cutlery etc. At sea side there is some shadow, other sides (on grass) have no shadow at all. We paid 52 NZD for 2 adults and 2 small kids at sea side. Nice camp site to go snorkeling at Goat Island.

  • Ask for a waterfront site they're lovely.

Very spacious sites. The facilities are nice and clean. 5 minutes good and hot shower for 50ct, that's fine. Paid NZD 42 for one night. Seems to be the regular price to pay for something good in this part of NZ. Half of the campsite seemed to be more or less permanent campervans with tents attached, but they were grouped at one site of the campground. Friendly campground.

  • We stayed, along with our friends (it was their first time a caravan), for one night.

We have been coming to the camp for a few years and normally thoroughly enjoy it. However, there seem to be more and more rules, ie. check-in from 2pm which is crazy, especially for a powered site. No visitors till noon, and they must leave by 8.00pm, yet curfew isn't till 10.00pm. The other disappointing issue for us that time was that although we had booked 2 sites side by side, we were to find on arrival that our friends had been relegated to the back row. Luckily after some re-jigging, they were able to camp beside us - this shouldn't happen. The .50c for the showers still causes a few hiccups. Should be changed to a timer, like fellow Miranda Holiday Park. These rules have put us off the camp temporarily which is a real shame as it was a favourite of our's. Please reconsider check-in times etc. However, still like the camp and the staff are great.

Hello Liz, We are very sorry your stay with us was not the best it could have been. Our rules have been in place for a long time now but we do have to be extra vigilant during our busier periods. Our office closes at 8pm and this makes it very difficult to know whether "visitors" have vacated or plan to stay the night. As we are a family park we do have a lot of families stay with young children who are generally in bed by this time. The check out and check in rules are fairly standard throughout most holiday parks but we do offer early check in or late check out for our camp sites as long as this has been arranged with our office. We apologise for the small error with your friends being separated and are happy we were easily able to rectify this for you. We do hope your next stay with us will be a far better experience and we ask if you have any concerns at the time of staying that you speak with the Park Assistant in the office at the time so they can do whatever they can to ensure your stay with us is satifactory.

    Regards, the team @ Whangateau

  • If you stay at the waterfront it would be a great campsite, however our spot was in the third row.

On this campsite there is absolutely no privacy, no trees, no nothing, so a very boring spot. If you like to camp in nature, like us, this is not your campsite. Kitchen and toilets are fine, however strange that the radio is always on, even at 6am. Its not our campsite and we will not come back.

  • They put us in a cabin that was one bed short and as we arrived after hours we didn't feel we could get his fixed so our children topped and tailed.

The wifi was also rubbish and it cost so it should have worked. Lovely view though

Hello Kerri, we are very sorry this happened. Definitely a mistake on our part as to being one bed short, hopefully an isolated incident that would not happen again. As to the WIFI this is not administered by us and we were having trouble for a little while there - the company has assured us the problem has been fixed. We hope that this will not deter you from visiting us again. Kind Regards, The team @ Whangateau.

  • Approach from Pakiri involves a short stretch of poor and highly unsealed road.

Highly organised and very well appointed site. Excellent facilities, especially for families. Kitchens and wash facilities all scrupulously clean. Stayed on waterfront site for $22 per person. Swimming from waterfront safe and good at high tide but inlet empties fast as tide recedes! Rule list looks intimidating but management staff were all pleasant and helpful.

We had a waterfront site which was stunning in every respect.

The camp would rate as one of the very best we have stayed in throughout New Zealand. Location, Staff and facilities were exellent. We really enjoyed taking just a few steps from the caravan into the water for a swim!

This was our first stay but we will most certainly will be back at the first opportunity.

  • Once again we had a most enjoyable stay in our Motorhome, this is a very well managed camp ground.

Showers were disappointing as the 50c always ran out long before the due time. It would also be excellent to have a vanity mirror in the ladies shower area instead of having to trek around to the toilets to finish dressing.

But all in all we lovde it and will certainly return.

  • Easy to find , friendly staff at front gate.

Facilities were great except the 50c shower caused a few issues when they didnt work how they were suposed to, but soon sorted by staff. Fruit and Vege shop onsite twice a week was a great idea, Awesum safe swim and rec area very close by to play ball and kids to let loose. Lock down of front gate was an issue for other campers who went to the movies in Matakana at night but it didnt bother us and the Reception made it very clear that LOCKED meant no getting vehicles in or out after 10.30- no probs once you know the rules.Camp sites were a bit cosy so would pay to mention if booking if you have a BIG tent and extras to setup . Great holiday will be back as it was so close to all great things up north.
