Mount / Mt Somers Track

Time: 6 hours

Passing around the southern face of Mt Somers through a mix of open grassland and forested catchments, this section of track eventually rises to its highest point at the junction of the Mt Somers Summit Track, with grand views over Mid and South Canterbury.

Getting there

Access to Woolshed Creek is through Mount Somers township. Follow the Ashburton Gorge Road for 10.5 km then turn down the signposted road 3.5 km to Woolshed Creek picnic area - a large, grassy, sheltered picnic and camping area, with toilets and information panels.

    Excellent circuit - mainly above the bush line + off the main tourist track so reasonably quiet.

    An ascent of Mt Somers is a good side trip - plus the new huts en route make a night out well worth it.
