Hired a Hitop camper from these guys in New Zealand.

The camper was exactly as advertised and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Both pick up / drop off locations in Auckland and Christchurch are close to the airport which is very handy. Would 10/10 recommend these guys for an easy fuss free hire

A horrible experience from start to finish - based at the THL CHC airport location with sporadic shuttle service, 2hr plus waits, an old campervan which had to be returned the next day due to issues and

then a huge wait to drop back despite paying the drop and go extra fee.....

We rented a motorhome through Chepa Campa operated by Apollo, we traveled for 22 days and we had a small accident resulting in a scratch and 2 small cracks on the side of the fibreglass of the motorhome

. It didn’t affect any mechanical part since it was on the body of the vehicle. When we returned the motohome one of the Apollo staff told us it wasn’t a very deep scratch and crack and it should cost between $300 and $1000, which for us was fair enough.

For our surprise, after chasing them for 1 week, they reply back charging an outrageous $5500 for the damage (pretty much the exact amount we pay for the bond, funny, no?)

We got another quote of $780 for the exact same job, also we sent the pictures to several repair companies and they were all chocked with this quote.

Apollo simply ignored us, since we had paid the $5000 bond in a debit card, and they already had our money.

Again, we were happy to pay for the damage, but for a fair price.

They also input some engine check and a bunch of things just to get our money.

We really thought they were a genuine company but they are totally untrustworthy.

We sent the $780 quote, which they obviously didn’t reply as well.

Thanks Apollo/Chepa Campa to make our holidays become a nightmare, and a very expensive one.

Upon arrival I received a van that had dirty sheats, empty gas tank and a tea cooker that was incomplete so was not able to make tea.

I was told to buy a new tea pot somewhere and get the gastank filled at any gas station. I could not find any gas stations around auckland that was able to fill my gas tank. Further it took me a full day to find a shop with tea cookers. I of course dont know where to go as it is my first time in NZ. Additionally it was also not nice to have to clean the sheets of the van on the first day after a 28 hour flight. 2 weeks into the trip our van started leaking water, still after two weeks the van is leaking and this company has not called me back to get it repaired after multiple promises of getting called back. Don't book with this company. If something goes wrong it is nearly impossible to get anything fixed, they leave you in the dark. Getting a hold of a living person on the phone when calling them is also nearly impossible.

I did have contact with RANKERS for some time but only got very expensive offers and always the hint that prices go up every week.

Well, in our case this was not true. We managed to book via cheapa campa - apparently a low cost sales channel of Apollo, and this almost last minute.

The camper was great, a Mercedes Sprinter campervan with very reasonable consumption. Of course it was not a luxurious version; but in such way you cannot damage expensive equipment...

We had great fun with 4 kids and made 2000 km in 2 weeks - and always managed to stay in a camper friendly town. Great Place and very good service by Apollo. Thanks!

I and my partner arrived to Auckland airport at 3:40pm.

We needed to call Cheapa Campa to pick us up but we were stucked on calling to Cheapa Campa using the free call number and ended up airport staff direct us to obtain assistance from i-SIte. We managed to contact them before the specified pick up time however the first thing I was asked by one of the staff was that I need to pay for late pick up fee but we refused to pay it because we follow their instruction to call before the specific time and wait in the specific area. As they were rush to finish their day, I was doing the paperwork and my partner went to check the vehicle with the other staff. However, that lady did not properly teach my partner how to use the facilities and check the gauges reading which make me encountering the grey water flew back to the toilet while I was having my first shower in the motorhome. This was a disgusting experience as the weather was cold at night and I was stucked half way of my shower. Because of this we did not use the shower facilities for 3 days until we stayed in a holiday park in Rotorua.

However, the after-sales support team members were very helpful in answering my inquiries and organised a repairer to investigated the problem. After talking to the repairer, I was properly explained on how to deal with the water tanks and gauges.

Absolutely appalled and disgusted with everything to do with Cheapa Campa from the very start when we picked up the 6 berth camper we hired for 2 weeks on a recent trip to NZ.

We were hit with lots of hidden charges additional to the amount we had already prepaid so it wasn't so cheap after all. We have hired campervans many times before from other companies and have never had this and also the insurance charge was ridiculous and hard to understand by the lady that served us. If we hadn't prepaid we would have walked out then and there. The camper itself was filthy dirty had engine fault lights on, blocked sink, blood running out of the fridge and a stench that was disgusting. Upholstery was stained and the bed above the cab wasn't fit to be slept on. Sand was throughout the van and didn't look look it had been cleaned in a long time. After spending over $30 on cleaning products and 2 hours trying to clean this filthy van the first night it rained and the van leaked and our pillows and bedding were wet. We had to drive back to Auckland and waste a whole day of our holiday arguing and demanding a new van that was roadworthy and liveable. We will never use Cheapa/Apollo again and won't recommend them to anyone. Very very bad experience and I just wished I had read other reviews when I booked.

Check-in staff were friendly and helpful.

The vehicles are fine, but they are badly let down by the maintenance, particularly from the Auckland depot. We lost 3 days of our holiday due to faults. Finally after a transmission failure, we were given a replacement vehicle.

Finally, at the end of our holiday, we were given a credit for 3 days hire, which helped to offset the inconvenience.

It is necessary to distinguish DOC of the North and the South...

There is more in the South and are better situated... In the North the price is exaggerated in camps more expensively than certain better equipped private campsites. In a general way it was a good experience on 18 days in NZ 14 days crossed in DOC campsite

    ok so the good bits.

We rented two vans and couldn't be happier with the price - the rates really were very good (we booked a winter special which meant a great discount on top of some very inexpensive rates to begin with). Both vehicles have run like clock work. The hi-top van has been great, very economical and very easy to drive. The 6 berth van has absolutely purred, and had no trouble starting even during some very cold mornings. Also the range and fuel economy is great (hokitika to Wanaka plus side trips on one tank - pretty much the entire west coast)!

The not so good bits. The sinks in both vehicles were blocked from day one (cleaned out the trap in the 6 berth and it was full of rice). Haven't bothered with the hi-top as you can see its blocked from the sink hole. Looks like both vehicle only got a quick clean before being sent out again. Went to use the snow chains on the larger vehicle - wrong size and they were broken (missing a hook). Luckily we weren't anywhere that required chains to carry on (we simply turned back). The 6 berth has 4 vents under the seats so you might be thinking - "great - four heating vents". Nah - 3 of them are fake - there's only one gas heating vent for the whole 6 berth van. During winter - you really need to take the extra electrical heating fan and stay at powered sites.

Added to the above - the "no liability" insurance option is actually not so. As it was explained to us you're still liable for damage to the roof and the underside which isn't covered by any of the insurance options listed on the website. In addition, none of the insurance options cover damage to tyres or windscreen (that's extra at the time of collection for $7 per day). The exclusion is in the terms and conditions - but its not up front on the web site. So - there's a reason why the rates are so good. Overall good vehicles, decent enough service, somethings not checked before vehicles are released, and a healthy does of buyer beware!

    1. They campervan got the Self Containment Certification logo on the back and they keep saying to us that they certified, but seems like they ignore the amended on March 2012 regulation regarding the certification

based by new regulation, they are not certified anymore because they don't want to pay for the certification.

Don't be surprised that if you got fined because your vehicle do not have proper certification.

    2. They charge to our credit card without our approval/authorization, during the last discussion we already got agreement that they will send the quotation for the repair of the rooftop and charge according to the amount in the quotation. but they charge $2500 + 3% surcharge to our credit card without permission and trying to give refund the balance from the quotation. but 3% surcharge will not refund to you although they charge without approval/authorization. and the charges is never stated in the terms and condition

    3. Aircon in the campervan cannot be used as a heater, and they tried to rent us the portable heater for $15 which we can brought at Warehouse below $14.

    4. Grey water leaking

    5. GPS useless/outdated, cannot find what we are looking for unless for some famous place. and sometime ask you for perform U-turn although you are in the correct direction.

    6. Customer service when return very rude and not helpful

    7. a lot of hidden cost, your value pack which suppose to cover full insurance is not cover full. it is exclude the windscreen, tyre, rooftop and bottom.

    Reviewed about 11 years ago

    Hi enjoy New Zealand,

Thank you for your feedback. I have taken your points raised and have sent them onto senior management to investigate further. To touch on your points:

    1. Certification is something we are already currently investigating- thank you for your information and I will be sending this on.

    2. Depending on which bond option you choose the money is debited from your credit card. Credit card fees do apply for this and are listed in our terms and conditions. I apologize if this was not made clear to you.

    3. We are happy if our guests wish to purchase a fan heater - rather than hire one from us.

    4. With regards to the grey water leaking- I hope that this was made clear to the branch staff so they could repair.

    5. GPS- it is common with GPS systems from anywhere that there can be issues with roads changing and the software becoming outdated quickly. I have forwarded this feedback to our operations team to ensure that the most up to date maps are being supplied.

    6. I apologize that the guest service that you received wasn’t up to our high standards- I would be interested to hear which branch you returned at so we can make sure training is enforced.

    7. Cheapa Campa does endeavour to list all outright costs in our full terms and conditions, and costs are not intentionally “hidden”. We do have inclusions and exclusions like any other company and we always recommend that these terms are read in full before committing to a rental with us. I do apologize that you were not aware of the full extent of these terms.

Once again- I thank you for your thorough feedback- please do send any further feedback to us on customerservice@cheapacampa.com so we can help to improve our overall guest experience.

    Kind regards

    Cheapa Campa Team.

OK- Key benefit is low price renting used camper.

Be prepared to take plenty of time during checkin to verify all key elements you care about. Our unit had solid engine, transmission, and brakes. The Fridge did freeze everything solid no matter the setting and hot water heater didn't work but we didn't really need that. Staff was very friendly and helpful on checkin in Auckland and return in Christchurch.

I would rent from Cheapa again.

    Hi Larry,

Thanks for taking the time to leave your comments. Cheapa Campa vehicles are our older 3-5 years models however these vehicles are still well maintained and serviced as they are sold after they come off fleet. They should come with the essential equipment suitable for the number of people travelling so I apologize if this was not the case. I do hope you had a great trip in NZ.

    Kind regards

    Hi kelsal,

Thank you for your comments. I have had a look into your booking and can see that you did call our roadside assistance department regarding the issue with the brakes and they have followed procedure in checking these. The branch has followed up on this and will ensure repairs are made if needed. I do apologize if you felt unsafe at anytime with our vehicle- all our vehicles are well maintained and serviced regularly so the fact you encountered problems with the brakes is being taken very seriously. In regards to the glass stove top that came off and smashed- this was due to general wear and tear, however it should have been picked up in the pre rental check so I am not sure why it was not. For that I do apologize and appropriate actions will be taken. I am glad that no one was injured due to this. I can see you were charged the gas bottle- however this was refunded when we refunded the compensation for 2 days rental due to the problems that you had. I can assure you that these occurrences are not common and we will look into this further. The final point regarding the ferry booking- this is not included in our rental price. You did book your Cheapa Campa hire through a Travel agent who may have made prior travel arrangements for the ferry on your behalf. For this I would suggest to contact them to make sure that this was confirmed. I hope despite the above issues that you did have any enjoyable holiday and saw all New Zealand had to offer. Thanks again for your feedback- we always appreciate this from clients.

    Kind regards

The camper van itself was basic but very comfortable.

The service / added extras are shocking. We had initially opted for the standard liability reduction. A very persuasive person at check in sold us a $300 policy whereby our liability was reduced to $0. This was sold on the basis of 'piece of mind' blah blah. We were told that there was exclusion for the chassis and roof. Okay we thought. On returning the camper we were advised there was a paint scuff about head height. We are adamant we did not cause this and believe it was there on taking the camper. We should have conducted a much more thorough inspection of the camper ourselves on pick up rather than rely on the sales agent. Our mistake. However, on returning the camper, we thought no worries; we had paid over $300 to reduce any liability to $0. As the claimed damage was neither on the roof or chassis, we thought, sweat, we are covered. WRONG! There are so many exclusions it’s not funny. Rather than just being the chassis and roof, on returning the van we were told that the expensive liability reduction we had gone for excluded anything above head height! I am 1.67m and the camper is 3.5m. If the chassis and anything over 1.67m are excluded, you can work out there is actually very little included! To make matters worse, Cheapa Campa demanded a $2500 credit card deduction to cover repairs for the scratch, charged us a $75 damaged fee and a 4.5% credit card administration charge!!! We have managed to get some of our money back, but still have a large amount in dispute. This has turned out to be the most expensive trip of the 5 camper van trips we have had in New Zealand. We will avoid Cheapa Campa (and their sister brands such as Apollo) in future. In my opinion, if you do go with them, note all the liability exclusions and get these explained to you before you sign anything. Also, avoid our mistake and make sure you do your own check of the camper on check out and note down every single scratch!

Good service but we had to buy some gear ourselves that should have been in the van already.

Hi Susie- thanks for your review. All basic equipment should be included with all vehicles (bedding and linen is hired at an extra cost with Cheapa Campa) so I am surprised at what wasn't included. If you did purchase items that should have been included we would be able to compensate you for this. Please email our customer service department with your booking details and we can look into this for you. I hope you enjoyed your self-drive holiday!

    Kind regards
