If there's one place in NZ where the ocean genuinely delivers on wildlife, it's Kaikoura. The deep underwater canyon just offshore pulls in sperm whales year-round, and the dolphin pods here are the largest in the country. You can swim with the dolphins or just watch from the boat - both are worth it - but if you haven't been in the water with a pod, it's a pretty special thing. Seals are part of the mix too, and my pick is to kayak out to meet them rather than watching from the shore, because that's where they really come alive. The RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on dolphin swims and seal swim experiences in Kaikoura, which helps.

The Kaikoura Region waters are cold, so for swimming encounters I'd lean toward November through April. Whale watching runs year-round though, and the first sailing of the day tends to be the calmest. Beyond Kaikoura, there's solid marine wildlife action further afield - dolphin trips out of Akaroa, wildlife encounters around Dunedin (penguins included, with the RANKERS code covering both), and dolphin adventures out of Paihia in the Bay of Islands with 10% off for Rankers users.
If you're flexible on where to base yourself, Kaikoura still stacks up as the single best stop for sheer variety - whales, dolphins, and seals all in one place. But honestly, wherever you are on the coast in NZ, there's usually something worth getting in the water for.
