The Wilderness Options Are Where It Gets Interesting
If you want something less theme-park and more backcountry, the Wanaka region has a couple of standout wilderness jet boat trips. My pick between the two is Wanaka River Journeys for the value, and the RANKERS code knocks 10% off on top. Then there's the Siberia Experience up near Makarora, which bundles a scenic flight, a two-hour walk through seriously isolated country, and a jet boat back out. Less people do it because not many have heard of it, which is exactly why it's good.
Worth Knowing
Taupo is another strong option, especially for the Huka Falls run, where you get the full force of the river right in your face. If you're on the West Coast, Ultimate Descents runs jet boating alongside their rafting operation, which is handy if you want to mix it up.
