NZ heritage doesn't always mean a stuffy museum behind velvet ropes. Oamaru in Coastal Otago is probably my favourite example of this done right. The whitestone buildings in the old quarter are genuinely beautiful, and then someone went and layered SteamPunk HQ on top of it all, which is just brilliantly weird. Local brews, real fruit ice creams, kids losing their minds on the rope playground. It's a good afternoon.
Central Otago does it differently. The Queenstown Region and Ida Valley don't need a lot of fanfare. The Ophir Historic Bridge is just there, in a valley that already feels like time forgot it existed. Over in Nelson, I'd head for the Cathedral area and walk down to South Street. Old colonial streetscape, still intact. Langfords Store nearby is the kind of place you go in to buy a postcard and come out two hours later.
Promo code RANKERS - good deal done!
If you're heading through Northland, Waitangi is the big one for NZ history. It's where the Treaty was signed and the grounds and museum do it proper justice. The RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on entry there, which is a nice heads-up if you're already planning to stop in Paihia.
