Accommodation ▷ Camping Grounds ▷ Basic Camping ▷
The real reason to basic camp through Fiordland is timing. Staying out in the Eglinton Valley instead of Te Anau puts you ahead of the tour buses that roll out of Queenstown at dawn and hit the Milford Road mid-morning. Your campervan is basically a built-in advantage here.
My pick is Cascade Creek, which sits closest to Milford Sound and is a big, spread-out site with plenty of room. The toilets are, honestly, a bit rough. Smelly is the word. But that's DOC camping for you, and if you've got your own campervan toilet you'll be fine. Bonus is the Lake Gunn loop walk right next door, a flat 45-minute stroll through rainforest that doesn't pull the bus crowds. Worth doing before you head off in the morning.
