Fantastic stay here, I had a self contained unit opposite the animals.
Barbara was super friendly and helpful, gave me a warm muffin on arrival and even dropped some of us to the tavern for dinner. Lovely and clean. Halfway between Havelock and Picton if you want to break the walk or ride.

Brand New shower & toilet block with lovely free hot showers.
Very good value for money at $30 for 2 ppl on non powered site. They can arrange shuttles to the bridge to nowhere bike track & canoe trips which I highly recommend. Also allow you to leave vehicles overnight while you're away.
Not quite the standard of a top 10 for cleaning etc but worth a stay.

Roomy gravel car park area by the river.
The nearest toilet block was locked, looks like permanently, so you have to walk 10 mins up Jones St to the local shops. Good burger joint there and pizza shop, bakery & off licence. Nice Riverside path for a stroll. Can also walk across the bridge into town in about 20 mins. Ok for a free site but bst to be truly self contained.

Great DOC campsite at the start of the Timber Trail.
No cell phone reception so make your shuttle arrangements in Benneydale! Big grassy area, long drop, water, BBQ pit in some areas. Very quiet, just lovely bird song to listen to.

A tiny trail head car park area with a long drop only.
No signage about whether you can camp or not, but it was deserted so we took our chances. Close to road but very quiet country lane so nothing came along all night. Prob only fits 2 small vans. Trail was closed when we were there due to bridge being washed out. It was closest free camping to the end of the Timber Trail so suited us but might not suit others wanting somewhere to hang out for the evening.

Great little spot a short distance from the highway, glad I took the chance on it.
Beautiful 2.5km circuit walk which was lovely after a ferry and long drive. Nice summer house/ shelter with chairs you can hang out in, and small kitchen area attached. I felt really safe as a lone female in my van. Was happy to pay the suggested $5 donation.

Great camping spot.
Flush toilet, water, wash up sink, and a hot shower could be bought for $2 from the portable shower unit. The Waikato River bike trail can be accessed from here, great ride or walk out to the suspension bridge or dam. Beautiful calm morning on the lake, great for swimming.

Park is well into it's renovation journey, smart clean bathrooms & kitchen, covered dining & BBQ area.
Has dump station & water & free WiFi. I thought good value at $25 for powered site for 1 person.
