A great place to stay other than it’s a little out of the way and you have to drive on some pretty windy and hilly roads to get there..
beautiful views on the drive though! It rained super hard all night and morning so we didn’t get to enjoy the beach unfortunately. A huge area for campervans to park, and we were the only ones there.

Very beautiful views of the lake.
I knocked it down a star due to the sandflies in the morning. They weren’t so bad in the evening or daytime. No toilet, but plenty of room for campers!

We pulled up, but decided to continue on..
it was kind of a strange pull in next to a dock area and only had room for 3 cars.

Pretty down by the water, but the bathrooms were FILLED with mosquitos.
A good stopover for the night as it’s close to the town, on the way to Milford, and included in the DOC conservation camping pass.

Super cool spot!
Lots of people, but a sink to do dishes (I probably wouldn’t drink the water), a toilet, beautiful sunset, and the ocean is very near the campsite and there are tons of cute little crabs to watch run around!

The location is not where this app has it marked, although very close so just look out for the signs!
Beautiful and relatively sandfly free, it’s just a quick drive to Lake Rotoiti for sunrise. The water needs to be filtered to drink, but the toilets are clean and the noise from the main road doesn’t affect the camp site much.

Perfect free site to stay in near Manapouri.
It’s a 12 minute drive from the town and the views if the river in the evening with the flowers and thunder clouds were very nice. No toilet.

Perfect place to stay outside of Franz Josef.
About a 15-20 min drive into town. We stayed 3 nights and it was included in the DOC conservation camping pass. You can camp on either side as you drive into the area, I would recommend going towards the right because there are brand new sinks, river and lake access, and fewer people!

Really nice spot to camp.
Sunrise over the lake was beautiful. Seeing the Weka birds roaming the campsite was cute- we even saw chicks! Clean toilets and lots of room.

Best campsite I’ve ever stayed at.
Absolutely beautiful views and 3 pristine walking tracks right off the campsite. Potable water, flush toilets, nice sinks, and the doc for Mount Cook national park is really close by as well and so interesting! We came at 7pm and still found a spot.
