Absolutely loved this site, self contained so didn't use the long drop though.
Just simple beatiful views, parked right by the lake, was windy but rocked is to sleep. Great walking path up towards Taupo, can also cycle.

There were just 2 of us and the campsite was quiet so didn't seem expensive at Nzd 46.
We had no neighbours on either side and were in block A facing the ocean and great ocean view. We mix with Freedom camping so paying now and again for a night is fine for us.

Hanmer Springs had now outlawed Freedom Camping.
There's a big sign as you turn off the main road and by the turning of what was the camping area. There still looks to be space for around 16 to 20 vehicles but we weren't prepared to be moved on in the middle of the night. With a giant sign expressly saying no camping is a risk, driving past the next day maybe a few people were camped.

Freedom camping at it's best, we were all alone by the lake.
Heard a few cars on the road in the morning but not early. Fabulous views. As other reviewers have said, anywhere from the turn off along the lake to the power station. We loved it as fully self contained as no facilities.
